Video Lag Problem

hi,
i used ati tool yesterday to attemp to overclock my ATI AIW 9600xt, after that i started having some major issues...
First, my computer would restart every 5-10 mins, doesn't do it now
Nextly, my computer crashed each time i tried to play a game or load the ati tv app.
those problems are fixed now...

however, now whenever i load tv and try to play halo 2, it is nearly impossible due to about 2 secs of lag, the clock is on default, and i have also tried raising and lowering it, still no affects... and i have tried fullscreen, medium, etc no difference...

also, after the problem, i had been wanting to reformat my hdd and re install Windows xp (sp1 on a disk, but right now and at the time of the ati tool use had sp2) because of viruses and junk...

having done that i figured that it may somehow make a change, yet it did not!

i have all the recent drivers from the site and the newest version of ATI Media Center and Catalyst.

preform a scandisk(you never know)

Open your pc, turn it on and see if all coolers are working? (GPU, mobo, CPU, PSU=powersupply,...)

download software to check the temp of your cpu/mobo

yup, it's all good, that has nothing to do with it as far as i know...

to eliminate a faulty graphics card, try it on a fren's pc.

it isn't the card, it's the f'ing clock or something like that

it's been working fine for 4 months, i doubt it's faulty...

can someone please give legitimate help (>_<)

I would have thought my suggestion was quite legitimate...but heck I'm just a noob...

As you mentioned in your first post, you've just overclocked your card recently and not 4 months ago.. Your recent adventure might have done damage to the card eventhough it 'seems' to be running fine now.

Having reformatted and done a complete scandisk and systems check, these would eliminated corrupted files and bad installs. The only thing left (logically) would be physical damage to the card itself. Trying it out on a different machine would easily eliminate the card as being faulty and move on to other solutions... Its all part of troubleshooting.

edit: When everything was running smoothly 4 months ago, do you have SP2 installed?

oh, i gotya...

and when i got it i had sp1 i think and got sp2 like a week or less later, and right now i am running sp2...
i think it's the chip itself that i completely screwed up because ive tried all new drivers, like 10 of em, lol, and i have tried to look for errors...

it makes an odd noise once and a while, not sure how to descripe it... eh i'll try, it starts at a normal gfx card pitch, then slowly gets higher, whole thing takes no more than 3 secs, then it returns to normal...
so i'm guessing i damaged my chip...

overclocking highers the MHZ of the AGP&PCI. This can result in damage.

try uninstalling all drives (use extra software to delete ATI drivers)
reinstall and pray?

Bump -sound laggs a ton now, yet the card seems a tiny bit better, or maybe it's the same..., but the sound is definately alot worse!

Were you stock cooling?
What processor are you using?
Whats the amb temp of your case?
this may seem vague, but hey it is worht looking at all the aspects of your pc. Did install anything else? Tried any other games?

Also try using 3dmark05.
This will crash if your pc is unstable, the forest test will show artifacts if your card is running to hot.etc

stock cooling, i raised the clock for like 3 secs, lol, so cooling shouldnt matter much. and as far as games go, it's not pc games i play, it's an All in Wonder, tv and xbox i use it for....

i don't think you know how to use the word "legitimate" right.... lol

3 seconds is MORE than enough time to fry something through overclocking. I've seen an Athlon XP blow in less than 2 seconds from startup cause the guy forgot to put the hsf on...

There are three different problems that this could be...

1) You messed up and smoked your vid card and now it's limping on one foot...

2) You messed up and smoked your PSU cause when your vid card messed up, it caused irregularities so now your PSU is messed up... Try your vid card on another computer...

3) You messed up something in your computer....

The odd sound from your vid card is definately a sign of a failing fan... put that in conjunction with your overclocking and that may have proved fatal....

in the event that i fried my gfx card, does that mean i'd need a new one, and can things be replaced?

unless you can do .13 micron precision soldering on your card, then no =D

Just try it in another computer. If it's still messed up then it's the card. You'll just have to get a new one.
