System Specs

PC133-memory and a motherboard

Namely this:
http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl/...1371/D1371.htm
(really cool of them to have full specs, I wish more manufacturers could do that).

And I have 2 sticks of 256MB memory, PC133. So, I want it to work, but it doesn't. Is it because they're not meant to be?

the specs say

Quote:
* 3.3V, SDRAM PC100, 168pin
* Max memory 512mb
* no ECC Support
you need pc100, not pc133...

Yeah, I actually got that (), but why won't it work? Also, I'm pretty sure I've used PC133 memory on BX440-motherboards..

@niko: Meh, you posted just ahed of me! That's what I though, but it doesn't work.

Chip density.

256MB must be dual sided and certain types of chips will still not work.

If you can boot and check the chip density, or look up the numbers off the chips on sticks that will work. Mebey we canb go from there.

some boards, especially ones from hp/compaq, are picky, and cannot backwards compat. with faster memory.

Quote:
These days memory settings are stored in an E2PROM on the memory stick, commonly referred to as Serial Presence Detect (SPD.) The settings in E2PROM are generally used as the default. Some motherboards allows end user to override the settings and some do not. PC133 are often backward compatible with PC100 because E2PROM is programmed with settings for both 133MHz and 100MHz bus clock. Compatibility problem arises when the manufacturer fails to program SPD for specific memory clock.

In reality, yes...pc133 is backwards compatibility with pc100, but some boards don't like it.

The mobo don't (or doesn't, I'm tired) recognize the sticks at all. It only beeps the "no memory installed"-beep. And if I install one PC100 128MB-stick and one 256MB PC133-stick it only recognizes the first one. Oh, BTW, the memory is tested on other mobos and is fully functional (I don't have those boards around though).

I've already googled everything I could find on the sticks but came up with nothing.

I think I blaim the motherboard though.. It's not very good.

EDIT: @KTR: Thank's man. So it would seem that the board is the problem then.

Ya there are a few select boards that don't like pc133 in place... It's pretty rare, but it does sound like your stuck with one of those...

Get Pc100 or your stuck.

its not rare at all. The boards that came pre-bulit had this problem...and back in the day, that was atleast 85% of them...very few custom bulit units, do to people did not have the knowledge to do so and that the parts were highly static senstive. So it pretty common for the incompatability...I see it all the time when i was working for Frys.

Well I have worked on and upgraded probably close to 30 compaq's and hp's and only had 1 machine not take pc133, most of which were pc100 boards...

Huh maybe just the luck of the bunch I had to deal with..

I bought a old board off e-bay once for just this reason.

A computer I was upgrading and cleaning was sent to me with 2, 512 sticks. No go, but the RAM off e-bay worked fine. I tripled my money, and they had to send the memory back.

Thanks!

Anyhow, I've been busy the past few days so I've decided to wait for the problem-solving. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for all the help.
