AMD Speeds up Dual-core Opteron to 3GHz

AMD plans to release two more dual-core Opterons in order to compete with Intel's latest Xeon processors. Server makers and channel sellers will gain access to the 3GHz(120W) Model 2222 SE and Model 8222 SE chips, which will slot in just above the already shipping 2.8GHz Model 2220 SE and 8220 SE processors. The 2000 Series products cater to servers with two-sockets, while the 8000 Series feed systems with four or more sockets. A similar 95W version of the new 3.0GHz chip for the 1000 Series line should also arrive in a few weeks. AMD has yet to release pricing for the 2222 SE and 8222 SE 3.0GHz models, as it does not plan to formally announce the product for two more weeks. These may be the last Opterons before the four-core Barcelona arrives.

For a company that prides themselves of being more efficient at a lower OC, what a Twist. I guess the P4 netburst is in all them after all.

A netburst CPU running at an equivalent speed, would eat up around 190W, so it's not that high if you think about it mate.

What planet have you been living on for the past year? Core2? 2/4/8 core desktops? 45nm soon? Manufacturers have moved away from the Mhz race and have done more operations per cycle then any time in history, creating super efficient cpus. What big ideas have you got to rekindle the "boring" cpu market?

I honestly dont understand by what you mean with that ECH. They moved to 3GHZ for the first time. Nothing wrong with getting to the 3GHz barrier. Also, they arent using P4 Netburst architecture. Hitting 3GHZ doesnt mean that. So, sorry, I Dont understand what you mean, but the W usage isnt outrageous at all.

After all it is still 45nm Conoers and Godzilla size cache.
And all that 4 and 8 cores are just Core 2 Pentium Ds.

This makes me wonder if AMD actually revised it or just increased the CPU multiplier. They're probably not doing too much considering their Barcelona core should be out soon.
