Company of Heroes 2 Will be DX10 Ready?
THQ has announced that the sequel to last year's Company of Heroes will be DirectX 10 ready. The proprietary Essence Engine of the original Company of Heroes series, developed in-house by Relic, will be upgraded in COH2 to support a dynamic weather system and more realistic physics, as well as the graphical joys of Shader Model 4.0. Since the game will be DirectX 10 ready, it will be playable only with Windows Vista OS. The game will be out in Q3 2007, until then enjoy the newly released Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts expansion pack.

First DirectX 9 capable card, the Radeon 9700 PRO was released August 2002. First DirectX 9 only game was Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness released 11 months after in July 2003 (if I remember correctly). Now first DirectX 10 card was released November 2006 and following the same pattern would push the first DirectX 10 only game to October 2007 = Q1 2008. Q3 2007 (CoH2 release date) ends in June 30, 2007 and that would be just 4-7 months after the first DX10 card. Half a year for whole gaming community to go Vista and DX10 GPU, they must be kidding (game will flop without buyers) or the quote part is false. Last I read even Crysis isn't Vista only. |

From what people say the only problem with vista is software compatibility. it don't use up alot of resources when you tweak it
many members of this fourm... well prob about 15-20, use Vista and happily game with it. They might lose like 2% of thier fps because of areo and dx9 cards.By November Vista should be compatible with alot more programs, and most gamers will have dx10 cards.. but I hope it will be dx9 campatible aswell, otherwise those with dx9 cards that like the game and want to play with us online, wont be able to play online... and that will hurt the online population = BAD!

Well we're still gonna have DX9 games to come for a while...there's too many of us with DX9 compatable cards (I have vista, but am contemplating going back to XP)...they'll lose so much money if they try to set requirements to Vista/DX10..that'd be stupid...new games will pretty much have some support for DX9/XP..if not there'll be patch's for it, because the largest gamer base is XP/DX 9...think about it? They might want you to get the new good stuff to crank it all the way up and play it top notch, but how is that any different from what they've done with any recent game? There's always the lower tier specs and lower tier compatabilities...they don't make large budget games to sell a few thousand copies of it. And yes the Vista/DX 10 market is growing, but it's still very young, unstable and immature..give it 2-3 years and that will most likely be a different story (and possibly DX 10.1/11..which is also kind of stupid). I don't think we'll se another version of DX that had the lasting power that 9 did..but I could be very wrong and hope I am.

lol "ready" which means there will probably be a directx 9 versiona dn a directx 10 version. i figured game manufacturers wouldn't jump to dx10 without keeping 9 support.

No even the quote you link to says its not... Opposing fronts is the expansion, CoH2 will be DX10 only and come out later. To clarify this up for people CoH: Opposing fronts is the exansion pack due later this year, it will work in XP and vista, DX9 and DX10. CoH 2 will be released god knows when, and will be Vista/DX10 only. - Most likely i think its VISTA only, rather than DX10 only. |
