Unstable X1950 Pro?...the read inside!
I've had VERY unstable game playing with a X1950 bought new... turns out there is an issue with the VRM chips overheating. Its talked about the X1950 Pro modded bios thread
anyway the ONLY way I have my card running 100% stable is replace stock cooler with Zalman VF900 and get a vrm heat spreader plate (and apply cooling to that too). Here are some pics, hope this helps someone ![]() Pic 1 (with text) ![]() Pic 2 (a little close up) ![]() Pic 3 (rear of card, showing additional heat sink on bottom of card, also clearly see cable tie) ![]() You can see the original thread here http://forums.techpowerup.com/showth...=25301&page=50 start reading from post #1226 on-wards. |

Oh and in case you are wondering, thats "hot glue" on the fan, obviously didn't working too well keeping the fan in place (hence the cable tie) :-)

Not too shabby, is there any way you can take better quality higher resolution pics and submit them? Those are pretty fuzzy at best. I like how you implemented the original fan.

yeah thats enough to cool it spud... but I would go for actual heatsinks, it would cool them better. Your cooling is BORDERLINE.

I would be cool if they sold the Sapphire X1950 pro heatsinks separately.

its getting replaced soon, it does the job for now, using atitool to heat card up sits around 41c according to temp probe, load temps on core decreased by 20c with the zalman, alot of difference compared to the crappy stock one.

Um what happened? I'm blind or i'm missing something in the pics?. Also like i said WITH the heat spreader it was still not stable and hot to the touch (hence the added CPU fan on there too); is that the difference between you and me ?

Not a bad attempt, but I do notice the ONE chip that ABSOLUTELY MUST be heatsinked isnt, the Pulse chip
I also have another modded bios out if you want to try that.

I thought that too but I thought I mis-understood, and its the VRMs that need heatsinks and not the PULSE chips?

I think they just select between NTSC, PAL and PAL60 formats.
