Sony Cutting price of Blu-ray player
Sony took a look at it's Blu-ray player, and decided that $599 USD was a little rich for a simple optical drive. And so, they have lowered the price of the BDP-S300 to $499 USD. Sony dedicates this price drop to increased demand for the product, as well as lower production costs.
The Inquirer points out that another possible cause of this price drop is the price of a Toshiba HD DVD player: less than $300 USD. Source: The Inquirer |

Pfft. I'd rather get myself a PS3 (it's a game player, semi-PC, and a Blu-Ray player all in one). Nice to see that Sony is bringing down the prices however...

Oh yeah, $500 is sooooo much better for a movie player
![]() No HD format will catch on until the players are <$200.

When will people learn
![]() No competition = high prices Competition = lower prices Any form of competition can dictate lower prices. IMO when combo hd/br readers become mainstream the price for a br or hd player should hit below $100 But there is still the problem with $30 HD/BR movies... |

Keep in mind that Blu-ray and HD-DVD is still relatively new technology though... I remember when DVDs and CDs cost a few dollars per disk, and the drives cost upwards of $400 each. Give it some time and it'll be as cheap as single-layer DVDs are to us right now.

i dont think a $100/£50 reduction will make people buy them(unless u got money to throw about). i can only see people buying them when then get to $200/£100 but that only my opinion :S

all we need is for the cheaper manufacturers to get their hands on a supply of drives and the prices will plummet.

Nice idea but I havent seen these players going for $599 in any circulars around here. All places, CompUSA, BestBuy, Circuit City, Walmart, etc have been selling them for $799 saying its a $200 price drop. They need to get their act together and follow the price set by sony.
They need to merge HD And BD. HD has a better codec used (not Java) and integrated ethernet. BD has higher quality (1080P) but uses a Java type codec.

You better check yourself before you wreck yourself.
HD DVD is 1080P up to 7.1 Channels uncompressed audio - - - - exact same a BD. The only plus to BD is 50GB rather than 30GB - but I doubt there will be a need for more than 30GB unless HD resolutions go higher than 1080P. Quote:

Actually the 'highest' form, but I'll let it slide.
Although, in this case, it's inversed. |

Well when you two are done making out over the internet can we get back to the topic at hand?
Sony is going to have to drop the price a lot more than that if they want to get in the majority of people's homes.

I'm going to refrain from saying the obvious.
![]() I still say, whichever format the porn industry is backing (HD DVD, right?) will be a contender for a long time. ![]() Sony still has its head up its ass. I mean, their console department is losing them tons of money, and the other departments have to compensate, which usually means crazy prices on top of crazy prices, which means fewer sales, which means hell in every department. |

Well, most people don't own HD Tvs, and they most def don't own HD DVD / BD players. At this rate, by the time HD is mainstream, On Demand and Downloading will overtake optical discs. Apple TV anyone?
