DirectX10 hardware...

I don't know if I believe this or not (no reason as to why I shouldn't) but whilst I over at The Inq I came across a recent piece of 'news' that really got me laughing, and if it's truth a lot of people here (and elsewhere) are going to be extremely pissed off.

If y'can't be arsed to read the whole thing here here's the main jist...

Microshaft do it again... DX10 card holders, your opinions please!

Balls - just thought this should be in the Video card section - if a moderator is reading this, could you change it over please. However the good thing is... I'm sorry!

Most likely true, but the deal is that the difference between DX10 and DX10.1 isn't really that big. And if you only have a DX10 card then you don't get the minor improvement of DX10.1 over DX10, but you still get the massive improvement of DX10 over DX9.

DirectX10.1...

Equals:

- 4x AA or higher always on
- audio processing on GPU
- performance optimizations

Really, there's absolutely nothing "to be extremely pissed off" about.

Arrrh yes but the people that have to have the best of the best will be. I know people like that - they will be. They'll buy a DX10.1 compatible card as soon as they can.

You're 100% right though, why would it bother people if it doesn't bring improvements? Let's hope that they don't make 10.2 (if there is one) DX10.1 hardware only.

I found the second quote in another forum that was an interesting concept. Do you think that this is Wild Bill's ultimate goal? Turning our PC's into a XBOX format??
Just thought I would ask.....

Quote from ExtremeTech:
The new features of the DirectX update includes shader model 4.1, as well as a variety of graphics features, including:

* TextureCube Arrays which are dynamically indexable in shader code.
* An updated shader model (shader model 4.1).
* The ability to select the MSAA sample pattern for a resource from a palette of patterns, and retrieve the corresponding sample positions. The ability to render to block-compressed textures.
* More flexibility with respect to copying of resources.
* Support for blending on all unorm and snorm formats.

The XAudio2 features include:

* Multi-channel and surround-sound support with full per-channel volume and mapping control.
* Programmable, cross-platform DSP effects framework.
* Per-voice filtering, arbitrary submixing, and multi-rate processing.
* Multicore optimized, non-blocking API design.
* Pluggable and generalized 3D spatialization support, with a full-featured implementation provided by the independent X3DAudio math library.

Doesn't this sound more than a minor improvement, it signals a CHANGE is coming again.
And those with current DX10 cards they will not be able to support these changes,,,,esp. after they just forked out $$$$ for them

I don't think the current 2Kseries support DX10+ but the next 65nm generation may do.

Maybe it was this article you read

Well that article is saying that they'll be bringing DX10.1 support later on. So maybe you read the article incorrectly. I'd be interested to read it if you do find it.

The Inq is highly respectable website - you're thinking of the Ugly Idiot Dick!

People don't (in my opinion) view the Inq correctly because they don't get their (if you will) dry, satirical style of writing. Polaris573, I'm not trying to place you into this category. I'm just trying to explain how I think some people perceive the Inq.

I don't see any point in upgrading to DX10 hardware as it's currently still in it's early developments. I've said this before somewhere in another thread. We don't currently have any native DX10 games, just bolted on 'goodies' in the form of patches. Which bring a bit of difference in performance (in a bad way) for just slightly better GFX, if you look hard enough. Another thing I've said before is, I won't be upgrading until companies such as nVIDIA & DAMMIT have massively reduced the power consumption. Plus, I'd want DX10+ built in. :P
