Cant burn dvd's.

I'll begin by saying wtf.

I wanted to back up some stuff right, just basic images and other files.
Anyway, so I loaded a CD-R into the tray burned most of the images on the disk etc.

I sent the cd to a printer, who printed all my documents fine.
As soon as I had finished burning the CD, I had to burn a couple of bigger files.
So I chucked a DVD-R into the burner, copy pasted the two large files and I get an error.

"Windows has encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do? Retry/Skip/Cancel."

Retry just brings the same error up endlessly.
Also - all of the DVD's turn up as full AND empty at the same time.
(Free space = 0, Used space = 0)

I did some investigating to try and narrow down the problem and Im still confused!
This is what I found out:

1 - The same problem in both of my OS's (32 and 64 bit XP). This led me to believe its a hardware problem. So either the DVD's were screwed or the DVD Drive itself.

2 - The DVD's are not screwed - I bought new ones today of a different brand and tried several all with the same results.

3 - The drive is not screwed - Burning CD's works.
Before you say "but sometimes a DVD drive will be broken and still burn CDs."
I tried burning files onto the DVD's on my mums laptop and I get the SAME ERROR

So unless Im the victim of 3 Operating systems with screwed drivers, two computers with broken drives OR the purchaser of two lots of faulty DVDs, Im at a loss for whats wrong .

Google search turned up nothing. The only thing remotely likely was some guy saying that installing stuff like Nero can cause the inbuilt drivers/burning service to screw up or become redundant. But I have none of those. Can anyone think of anything?

The files may be too large? Try compressing or zipping???
Other than that try a diff burning app.
Try changing file name or type.

Dont use the built in Windows burner, its crap Install Nero7 and make a 'Data DVD', this will solve all of your problems

CD's/DVD's always show with free space = 0. To explorer they're read only.

As for the drive being screwed, could still be, the fact that it burns CD's means nothing. I would recommend trying a 3rd party program though, Nero is a good suggestion.

Thanks francis - that program works wonders. Nice find.

I tried my own nero (both of them - i have nero smart start, which didnt have a working key nor one that i could find and I also tried my Nero 5 disk but that doesnt support burning DVD's ).

I even tried the newest version of nero (torrented) but I couldnt find (or bother to find) a key for it. That deep burner works just fine for me, and its really easy to use.

A single layer DVD is 4.3GB, a dual layer disk is 8.5GB.

Totally agree with you there. I burn finance backups to CDRW, and 50/50 it will either work, or give an error. I retry 2-3 times, it eventually works.
But drag and drop is so darn easy... I know, I know.... when it works....
