Happy 25th Birthday to the Compact Disk

25 years ago, Philips created the world's first compact disk in their Hanover, Germany production line. While CD production started in August 1982, it wasn't commercially available until November 1982, and even then only in Japan. Once compact disks became available to America in March 1983, the industry embraced them whole-heartedly. Why bother with flipping over a tape every 20 or so minutes when you can listen to 80 minutes of music on one side of one disk? As of late, the CD is still one of the most popular forms of storing music, and is used from everything from data storage to software installation disks.

Philips deserve some credit for allowing the CD to be widely adapted without imposing silly levels of royalties or restricting development and the third party enhancements of the format which they also did the same with the DVD format and for that reason HD-DVD should be the next gen format or run the risk of having a very development restricted and costly alternative.

lol.

I inherited all of my mother and father's vinyl, when they got rid of their turntables. At about 75-100 albums, my collection isn't huge by any means, but there are a few notables in there.
