HD VMD is a true HD format with 1920 x 1080i/p resolution, up to 40 Mbps bit rate playback, DVD up-scaling.
Sounds interesting but if companies wont support it then its useless.

not really. then everyone who has either BRD or HD will be up the shit creek without a paddle. Ill admit, the price is attractive, what it offers and the codecs...but this is something the industry doesnt need right now.

Well having two formats can start some competition and lower the prices on discs and players

Well since a company is making an HD-DVD player for 189$ ( Posted about it 3 days ago ) i guess this new format wont go anyplace...Besides even Blue-Ray is starting to fall along with the Toshiba HD-DVDs.

Actually it is Blue-Ray since the laser beam eminating is BLUE-VIOLET thus the name Blue-Ray ( Blu-Ray ).
Check some sources before you speak especially if you dont master the subject.

If that's true, Hellas, then Blue-Ray would mean HD-DVD Player also because it uses a blue ray as well.

Well Blue-Ray was announced first, i doubt Toshiba would call their Project Blue-Ray too.
Trust me i was here when Blue-Ray was announced years ago and even companies sometime refer to it as Blue-Ray and sometimes as Blu-Ray.

But Blu-Ray is the official name. Just look at the title (and article for that matter) of the Wiki link you provided. Nowhere does it call it Blue-Ray, it refers to it as either Blu-Ray or BD. Yes, it uses a blue laser, but it is named Blu-Ray.

When it was first announced it was called Blue-Ray, later on some companies decided to call it Blu-Ray since nothing really changed in the Pronunciation of the product and Blu-Ray is abit better as a title.
You can also see in Articles like This or in official products like This or This that both terms are used. They sound the same so its more a matter of who likes what most.

It is not Blue-ray. In fact, many of us have been misspelling it. It's not even Blu-Ray, it's Blu-ray (R not capitalized).\

As for your Price Grabber link, that's a misspell. Here's the product page at Phillips. http://www.consumer.philips.com/cons...37_US_CONSUMER

For your link at NexTag, you searched Blue Ray Players, and Blu-ray players came up. because Blue-Ray is a common misspell. Notice that all the products are listed as Blu-ray, not Blue-Ray.

For your JYI link, a journalist spelling it as Blue-Ray, doesn't make it right.

Wile if you were around when it first got announced years and years ago you would know that the player took its name from the Blue-Violet beam, nothing more nothing less.
Besides when you speak Blue and Blu what difference do you notice ? I dont....

Yes, it sounds the same, but we're not speaking, we're typing. As it's being read by others, Blu and Blue make a difference.

I only stepped in because you claimed Blue-Ray is correct, when it isn't. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't really care that it's misspelled, as I got your point anyway.

It is correct unless you can prove that Blu has a reason to be used....Blu is not a word, it is nothing...But just "happens" to be pronounced the same as Blue...And it "happens" for the player to have a Blue-Violet beam....And it "happens" for many people and websites to also refer to it as Blue-Ray....But like i said if Blu has a meaning im happy to hear it

The Blu has to be used trademark reasons. You can't trademark the word blue, so you have to make up a word, in this case, it's Blu.

A product name needs no meaning, it just needs to be protectable. The word blue is a color, it cannot be claimed as a trademark. Read the link I provided. Here it is again. http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/#bluray_name

And again, Blue-Ray is used as a mistake, or because it is commonly misspelled as Blue-ray. That doesn't mean it is correct.

So the only reason they didnt call it Blue-Ray OFFICIALLY is that the word Blue cant be copyrighted....So they use Blu which sounds the same as Blue.....I guess noone is wrong in that case.

The word 'blue' most definately CAN be copyrighted - - - - Maybe just not by itself. Example: Jet Blue; Blue Sky Studios; Blue Sky Tex Systems; Blue Water Books; etc.

Also, what do you mean by "Some Companies". Blu-ray is a SONY product. Sony OWNS Blu-ray. No other companty is involved in the ownership of Blu-ray.

Like i said last time i checked BLU has no meaning at all...And in the beginning SONY announced Blue-Ray based on its Blue-Violet beam. Now why they changed it to Blu-Ray i do not know. I cant know what SONY tought they could benefit from doing that. But like HD-DVD which stands for HIGH DEFINITION DIGITAL VERSATILE DISC Blu-Ray should also stand for something. So far NO optical media or device has a name that means nothing.

the name is Blu-ray and that is final. Otherwise, hell, i might as well call an athlon 64 a pentium 4... after all, they're both processors.
yes, the laser is blue. yes, blu is an intentional mis-spelling of blue. no, that does not make the name blue-ray. Deal with it
