Classic Socket 478 Thread Question: PIV 2.4 or Celeron 2.8?
Hey, everybody -- I'm in a situation where I want to upgrade my laptop. I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100, with the unique presence of an upgradeable socket 478 socket with 400MHz FSB inside...
It's got a Celeron 2.0GHz chip in there now, and I'm looking to upgrade! My question is... What makes more sense? Get a new Celeron 2.8GHz chip like this one for about $35, or try and get a true Pentium IV at around 2.6GHz for about $80 (which seems to be what they're going for)? In your expert opinion, which one will be better bang for my buck? |

I'd probably just go with the 2.8GHz Celeron, I can't imagine you doing that much on the laptop that would give you that noticeable of a difference by going with the P4.

Indeed, the 2.8GHz desktop 478 Celeron puts out about twice as much heat as the 2GHz Mobile version already in your laptop. Unfortunately the Mobile 478 Celerons only went up to 2.5GHz.

Thanks, everybody! In response:
1) It'd be a 400MHz fsb, unfortunately, just to make sure. 2) Oh, i know, but who doesn't want the fastest you can get! ![]() 3 & 4) I am a bit worried about that, but wouldn't the PIV's have speed-stepping? That would keep it cool most of the time (or is that dependent on other factors? OS, MB, etc.) PowerLeap.com offers up to a 2.8GHz PIV for my laptop -- surely they wouldn't recommend something that would burn it up unless they wanted to hear from too many peoples' lawyers, right? :P |

I definately reccomend the Celeron. Since it's a laptop the celeron would be better off because the disabled L2 means less power consumption AND less heat output. Hell my uncle was fixing an old HP today with 256MB SDRAM and a 1.2GHz celeron and after he got done cleaning the viruses the system was actually pretty quick.

It's a laptop it's not like he is gaming. My 2GHz celeron did unreal tournament, quake 3, Battlefield 1942 fine. The celeron is really better for the laptop.

i still dont recommend the low cache size on the celly the p4 would be a better chip and a 2.5ghz p4 would out do a 2.8ghz celly
how bout this? yeah i kno what i just said and yes this is a celly ![]() http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116035

I've love to have this laptop as a mobile encoding/ripping/compiling unit, so as much speed as possible would be great (at a reasonable price).
I'm wondering, though, about what some people said about "mobile" Celerons -- what denotes them as mobile? Every one I've seen for sale has just been a regular "Celeron" with nothing to denote the presence of a mobile status. |
