question about dvd rip & burn speeds

hey, i bought a samsung 20X dvd+ - R sata blah blah blah dvd burner here is the link
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827151153
about a month ago to replace my no name 4X ide dvd burner. and i dont know if i dont have it set up right or what my problem is but i have noticed no speed differance in either ripping or burning speeds between the 2. right now i am using maxell 16X dvd-r's and i have tried sony 16X and memorex 16X and all are about the same. when i rip something it only rips at 2X or 2.6X and i set it to burn at 16 or maximum and it seems to burn just as slow as the previous ide drive. total time from rip to burnt dvd takes about 30 - 45 min. is that normal?????

dont sound right are you using nero? you should be able to burn up to x16 easily.. so a dvd filled should take less than 10 mins.. are you using the verify data after burn? you dont need that and it could double your time.

it says that it is burning at 16x but i just dont think that it is. if i burn a cd with it it spins all crazy fast like it is gonna fly away. but with a dvd it just pokes along barely audible. and i usually use dvd shrink which uses the nero engine. the drive came with a auto update firmware program but every time it downloads the firmware it says wrong version. and i have downloaded the right ver from the samsung web site and when installing it says wrong ver as well. i just figured that it being a 16X burner it would cut the whole rip and burn time down drastically but maybe my expectations were set too high. i dont know.... any other adivce?

not from me but a bump.. you should burn a full dvd data disk in 10 mins or less @ 16x.. maybe you have a defective drive? I donno.

You notice the difference, but I found discs burned at 16x were less reliable than 8x so went back for the reliability !If you watch the screen (nero) while it`s burning it will indicate what speed it`s burning at.You can also try dvd+r instead of dvd-r.
