New Linux Distro, Vixta, Looks Surprisingly Like Vista

While some current Linux users got Linux to escape from their perceived problems with Vista, other Linux users are attracted to Linux because of Vista-like features. The developers behind Vixta are banking on the latter. While the SourceForge project is hardly ready to compete with Vista on a competitive scale, it certainly is gaining momentum. Vixta is based on the Fedora core of Linux, and has five goals in mind. Vixta must...
  • Be Absolutely free, in every sense.
  • Spread Linux to the "masses".
  • Not require any advanced configuration.
  • Be User-Friendly.
  • Be Eye-catching, and have a familiar look and feel.

That is scarily like Vista, but i bet this will work with little to no problems!

Wont need to turn off the UAC (User Account Control) in Vixta either! Stupid Vista piece of software!

Well done to the Linux team, keep the good operating systems coming!

Good find Zek

Personally, I think Linux should focus on trying do differentiating itself from Windows and not try to look exactly like it. This is also why I don't like KDE (looks to much like Aqua).

i used to think they should be different but a lot of users out there would be happy with vista and dont want to pay so they could get a £280 laptop with linux pre loaded!!

Linux should look different than windows.. I too dislike KDE for this reason. In my opinion as a Linux user Gnome with Compiz-Fusion is the ideal interface.

Linux is entirely different than Windows software and driver wise. Certain apps will work if you use Wine (winehq.org), but otherwise you're out of luck. If you're really wanting to give Linux a try, wait till the 18th of this month for the newest version of Ubuntu.

Anyone remember Lindows? Didn't they have to quit/change the name because of Microsoft? I wonder if this will have simular problems because of the name and/or look!?

They're called LinSpire now, and offer a completely free version called FreeSpire.

excellent move by linux companies. with having linux similair to windows, users that are used to windows will be more welcoming to linux. have you guys tryed LinuxXP? looks EXACTLY like windows xp, even the same freaking wallpaper... and it runs flawlessly, i think its based on the debian core similiair to ubuntu.

watch as some spy from MS catches wind of this news and then tries to press charges against the creators of copyright infringement. Just like Linspire (Lindows)

Being Fedora based, is it still 100% compatible with the Fedora repos?

UNIX`s X wil never be as flexible as the M$`s one .... simpy the kernel and the modules architecture doesn`t allow that.Yes it may be made to "look" like something but never can be made to be used by my mother for example.
I guess it will take the developer community like 10+ years to develop x-window system that can be so flexible and customizable as the one used in windows xp ... not to talk about vista ..

I`m a fbsd user myself, but I`m using only bash tho , never using X .... s0x for me very much.

Cool. I tried it in a virtual machine. Lots of issues, but it looks nice. Overall, its useless on any modern machine, like pretty much every distro I tried in the last 9 years.
