help convince me not to buy a ps3

over the past year i have really been into buying and overclocking computer hardware. ive always loved building rigs and messing around with hardware hacks. lately though ive been frustrated with the rate technology is progressing. i bought myself a nice big 1080p tv a couple of weeks ago and i love it. now i need a blu-ray player so im pretty sure by xmas i will buy a ps3. it has a great blu-ray player and eventually it will have great games. it plays ps2 games better than the ps2, it does folding@home and it upconverts regular movie dvds to 1080p quality. all that for around 500 bucks. or, i could spend 500 bucks on a high end video card and have no money left over to upgrade my mobo and cpu... so you see that the console seems to be the right choice for me. but i dont want to because i love computers! bah!

Get the PS3, they are great. The $500 will get you a console that will last for years without the need to upgrade anything. Right now it will get you a Video card that will only last you a year, maybe two.

Get the PS3 now, start saving again, and by the time you have $500 again graphics cards will be miles ahead of what they are now and you will get something much better for your money.

that is exactly what i am thinking. it isnt easy keeping up with all this hardware. im beginning to think it is a big waste of money! of course, it is all relative to how much you like to game and mess around with computers. i mean, if you really think of what the ps3 does it is totally worth the 500 bucks.

Definitely, that is why I still have 7900GTs. I gave up on having the latest and greatest a while ago. I came to the realization that games don't have to be played on high settings to be fun.

Or wait a few months and get and Xbox 360 that doesn't crash. I don't own a PS3 or a 360, but I prefer the 360 overall (for reasons including price).

I have been thinking of a PS3 or 360 just for fighting games. But if that stopped me from having a good PC.....it would never happen.

Don't get a PS3. Get a 360 for the games, take it from me, other than Blu-Ray my PS3 gets little use... It doesn't have any good games.

sony really needs to get its ass into gear with the games it release. i would go with the xbox 360 (from a PS fan) and just use your comp for general internet/light gaming

Sorry, can't tell you not to get one because I'm using those reasons to buy one myself

My PS2 broke during my move to a new house, so I've been Playstation-less for awhile. Compatibility with older games + Blu-Ray + Final Fantasy VIII = PS3 FTW! At least, for me it is. I'm just as happy paying classics as I am with the new eye candy games.

yeah go ahead and pick up a ps3, i love mine but really theres not many ps3 games ive even bothered playing. i got one of the 60g ones with the emotion engine in it. i play ps2 on it and check out demos and stuff every now and then. there will be good games for it someday, and when there r i will be ready. i also stuck a 160g 7200rpm hd in mine. twas a nice upgrade. now, if i just had the time to finish ff12... the next gran turismo and the ff13 games will rock the world when they finally come out.

besides we all know bluray will win.

i am thinking of buying the ps3 primarily because it is a blu-ray player and a dvd upconverter. the fact that is plays games is secondary.

i have thought about that. but the problem is the tv is downstairs and my pc is upstairs. if i were to move the pc then i would sorta be limiting my time on it because if my wife is watching tv then i cant play games and if im playing games on the giant monitor then she cant do stuff on the pc. and as much as i like to spend time with my wife it is nice to have that buffer zone!

I would definitely get an Xbox 360...yes I own one, but not a PS3. A few of my friends have a PS3, and they rarely play it. I ask them if I can go to their house to play PS3, but instead they turn it around and ask if they can come to my house to play my Xbox 360. First of all, the games are amazing compared to PS3...Gears of War (which will come to PC), Halo 3, and others too. The price is cheap nowadays. $350 for a Premium Xbox 360 with HDMI! The new Falcon 65nm CPU chips are rolling out (and Jasper next year), which is nothing but good news. As long as you keep the Xbox 360 in a well ventilated area, I'm sure that the chances of getting RROD are slim. Another reason for an Xbox 360 is Xbox Live! Amazing service..yeah you have to pay $50 a year, but when you think about it, it's really worth it. You can rent/buy HD Movies from the Marketplace...buy full seasons of SouthPark! What else do you want? It also has HD-DVD...for only $170...including King-Kong, and 5 free HD-DVD Movies after MIR. 6 HD-DVD Movies...and an HD-DVD player for only $170...if you don't want HD-DVD, then it's as simple as not buying one...unlike with the PS3 it's included, whether you like it or not...you don't need a Blu-Ray to play huge games...Valve managed to fit HL, HL2 EP1, HL2 EP2, TF2, and Portal all in one disc on an Xbox 360...that's a normal DVD.
All of these are reasons why not to buy a PS3.

I haven't touched a console in almost 10 years. Ever since I got my first 3D accelerator card for PC (Voodoo Banshee). That was back in 1998. Last console I owned was PS1. No point really, once you have a dedicated gaming PC machine, it is easy to expand its capabilities to match and/or surpass the tech level of whatever console that comes along. Movies & media? Dedicated player box, or even a decent media-PC box will always beat whatever capabilities a console can give. Especially in terms of customization and expandability. Most games that come out for consoles, come out for the PC as well. Again, PC ports always have more customization vs. their console versions. As for games for which there are no PC ports, usually these games are console-only for a reason. (kiddie crayola games, with few exceptions thanks to their publishers for mostly marketing reasons) Also, there are emulators. Sooner or later (usually much later), every console is reverse engineered and an emulator pops up. Nearly half PS2 games are already playable on an emulator (providing you have a powerful & modern machine), and within a short period of time the rest will be as well. If you care about console games that is. (I don't.) By the time PS4 rolls around, there will be a working emulator for PS3.

Seriously, if you are over the legal age, I don’t see a reason why you should own a console. Unless you are some kind of eccentric billionaire who still likes to play with his cho-cho trains. I mean, if you have the technical know-how to put together a gaming PC from the ground up, why do you want a console your 8 year old neighbor plays with?

Not everyone can keep upgrading their computer over and over on a constant basis just to be able to play games. If you buy a console, all the games that come out are guaranteed to play on it, just put the disc in. With a PC, you have to meet the requirements etc. And you said by the time PS4 comes out, there will be an emulator for the PS3...so what? You still won't be able to play the PS4 games...am I not right? I don't want to play previous-gen games when there are current/next-gen games out already.
