World's Biggest Pre-release Pirate Music Site Ceased

British and Dutch police said they shut down Tuesday the website OiNK, the world's biggest source of pirated pre-release chart albums. OiNK distributed albums often weeks ahead of their official release date. More than 60 major album releases had been leaked onto the Internet so far this year. The site had an estimated membership of 180,000. People were only invited to become members if they could prove they had music to offer and had to keep posting tracks to maintain their membership. It is alleged the site was operated by a 24-year-old man who lived near Middlesbrough in north-east England. He was arrested Tuesday. The site's servers, based in Amsterdam, were seized in raids last week.

i uh...used to visit oink...er...i mean my 8th cousin's, uncles, great grandads ex wife used to visit oink and is very disappointed it is closed. i, er...she always buys albums but would frequent the site to get opinions on new independent music that wasnt played on the radio. after all, we all know that while payola is illegal in the U.S., these massive recording companies are greasing the wheel.

OiNK was only good for small unsigned bands, and really hard to find stuff. I found one of my dads high school friends' band on there. He was pretty happy about it.
