New PS3s Shipping with 65nm Chips

Sony has rather quietly decided to introduce a new 65nm version of the Cell processor into its new 40GB PlayStation 3 models, which has helped to significantly reduce the console’s power consumption. With the older models, the machine would require 200W when running, whilst the new model only uses 135W. Not only does it mean reduced power consumption, but the new 65nm Cell should hopefully allow the console to run cooler and quieter. Sony has also altered the 40GB version to include a smaller heat pipe, a new motherboard version and added a battery so the console keeps time when disconnected from the mains.

No news on when (if) the 80GB's will get it? Maybe Sony will just put out a new "120GB" model, even though the hard drive is the least significant change between all the versions

I believe I worked it out to about $11/month if I kept a PS3 running FAH all day/night at 200w. Could save a couple bucks, but I'm not giving up compatibility.

I have a launch 60GB PS3 that has been rock solid. The PS3 is so well ventilated that it barely runs warm when playing for hours. So a 65nm PS3 is not a huge selling point for me and like the previous poster mentioned I have FULL 100% compatibility with my launch PS3.

i was wondering...by full compatibility you mean that your ps3 can play ps1 and ps2 games? because i hear the 40 gig will not play ps1 and ps2 games. or something like that...

I dont think so, but it will make the machine run cooler and use less power (and also make the machine more quieter).

No, unfortunately not, so it won't fix any framerate issues I'm afraid. The CPU itself still runs at the same speed, and I don't think they would ever make a faster version because the customers who paid the launch price wouldn't be impressed if developers started making games that were intended for the 'faster' version.

Yes it can play Playstation1 and Playstation2 games because it comes with built-in chips for both types of games. Only the original Playstation3 systems have that feature of on board hardware emulation. With the Europe release Sony removed the hardware inside the systems and only offered software compatibility in the Playstion3 models to cut down on cost.

No the 40GB Playstation3 only plays PS3 games. If you try and insert a Playstation1 or Playstation2 game it will give you this message.

Well both of us are just making assumptions atm, for it is to come out on NOV 2nd. I dont see why it wont have ps1 BC, because PSN has PS1 games for sale.

So it is backwards compatible with PS1, not PS2.

well it does make sense...why sell PS1 games on PSN, when you cannot play it.

That's a really nice figure for power consumption....especially if you like to do folding.

well, I dont know, my ps3 runs hot to the touch (it does burn) when I play it for a few hours and I can also tell a difference in my room. Id imagine this would help me a great deal, too bad Im not giving up my PS2 compatability for it.
