8800GT: £154.99 pre-order - I thought these were going to be cheaper :(

Rip-off Britain: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134393

For some reason I thought these would be in the £130-£140 price range

They are ranging from 130-180, I've already talked to several people today, who ordered them, not just pre-ordered.

The thing that's bothering me, is that the performance tests and comparisons done with these don't often cover DX10 applications, nor have any results working with any of the new 3d applications that really reflect what we can expect from such applications in the future. The closest might be the Crysis demo, which in itself is almost inadmissable given how old the demo is. Plus, there's no comparisons to the new 640GTS, which will be possibly less than 300 GBP.

My other concern is that of the 512 vs 640 RAM. Games are still heavily vram intensive, whether it be Oblivion or Crysis and this may stay the same for some time to come.

If I could garuntee that the 512 vs 640 wasn't an issue of concern, and if these cards paralleled the GTX in performance, I might be more inclined, but early reports hint that the new GTS will have 1gig RAM and outperform the GTX. I'd gladly wait and secure one of those.
It just feels a bit too early to be making decisions.

I just hope they're doing it more so they can use them as a bartering chip for a shiny new 9800, rather than expecting they're going to get some large performance increase.

If they don't have an 8800 card, these will be nice for the cost, if they have a 640GTS or better, then I hope they aren't too dissapointed with performance.

And...alas, the GTX still wins, if the price comes down on those, especially after GTS launch, then ...this could get interesting.

I think the price of the 'old' GTS and GTX will be 'forced' to come down. Because who will want to pay the current retail price for them now...........nobody! (the online retailers must be fuming about the 8800GT!)

Ya, hookey, that's what seems logical. Yet the GTX still wins, so they don't HAVE to drop it too far, but in comparison to the new GTS I'm sure it will come down. The old 640 will probably still hover in the same range as these new GT cards, because they may think they can fool people with the names GTS sounding greater than GT ?

As for fuming, just think about the poor 320 owners and distributors. 320s are already on 'End of life' status!

I'm sitting here thinking about putting this spare 640 GTS in the FS sub-forum, but ... I cannot be 'arsed' to take any pictures of it ;/

I agree.

The average PC user looking for an upgrade will be fooled by the GTS name, but the real PC gamer wont

The GTX is still a monster of a card, but with the 9800 series around the corner, who will want one? The GT will now be the 'inbetween' card for those waiting for the 9800 series to emerge.

I personally think the GTX will have to be sold for around £250 now, or it will sink!

Which is usually represented by 'out of stock.'

"Discontinued" points to something that's past it's phasing out "end of life" stage.

Let's hope you're right

This £13 surcharge to N.I. SUCKS ASS. So much for free 5 day delivery and a £6 N.I. fee... As it was sitting in my cart and I was asking the lady from rippoffbuyer, sorry ebuyer, why I was expected to pay £13 instead of the usual £6 surcharge to N.I. some complete and utter bastard bought the last one

If any of you wonderful, kind mainland UK residents feel like sending me one of these tasty cards for retail price plus a few quid towards postage (not the usual £10-£20 crap we ulstermen are expected to stump up) feel free to let me know!
