Next Gen Desktops Vs. Next Gen Laptops
Here is a question that came to mind when I was reading the new Computer Shopper mag. in the airplane this week... Which one would you mind spending your money on now a day, a Gaming Desktop Computer or a Gaming Laptop Computer? They showed 4 gaming laptops that were on the market and how they did to each other on playing F.E.A.R. and Company of Hero's. The pricing on the laptops were extremely high to what I would spend on anything that nature...
The one that won it was the Alienware Area 51 m9750 with :
Now, to me thats to much to pay for a computer... Yeah, its Alienware, but I could build 3 desktops for that much. So my questions are these... Why would you need something like this when you have that desktop at 3 grand less? And, for whom would be the "control group" that they are looking at?

Most people can make pretty good use of laptops, but some people need high-powered stuff to do high-powered work. Graphics design on the go, possibly.

Yeah, I can go with that... But if the fact was to show how the laptops did on say rendering using Rhino, then why didn't they show that?

Perhaps it is more directed to gamers on the go?

I'd get a desktop. Only because I already have a laptop. Really though...even my 15.4" screen is big for a laptop. I get it so I can do stuff on the move...that was my whole motive for a laptop.

Thats what I get from the article.. I understand the whole Land party thing and wanting something you don't have to carry 30 different parts for... But to spend 5 grand on something like that. Is It worth it? Now a day you can spend around $1500 on a rig that has wi-fi built in, and the only things you need to carry is:
So why spend that much on something like that?

well i think it is because showing it used in gaming is like chics with big hooters, it gets everyones attention and they figure once they have your attention you will look into it further.

There has to be a market for everyone. I spose there are people out there that don't want a desktop pc taking up rooom but they want to play games as well..
I don't think they bring out SLI 7950GTX's for rendering, it is purely for gaming I would say.. But yes, its way to expensive....

I can see where you go with that... Everyone has a "Price Range"... I guess the only people that would ever think about spending that amount of money on an Laptop is a person who, like you said DrunkenMafia, that wants not to take up the space and is all ways on run... But there is still a whole lot of other choices there. Right?

I think I'd prefer a desktop , laptops are just for the purpose of convenience.
