Best Buy Offers Cheapest HD-DVD Player: $180 Toshiba HD-A2

The Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player has been earning a name for itself lately, and be exactly what HD-DVD proponents need to spread their HD format. While Wal-Mart will price their HD-A2s at $198, and Circuit City will offer them for $197.99, Best Buy has both retailers trounced. For $179.99, you can get yourself an HD-A2, and everything that comes with it. Best Buy is sold out of HD-A2s at the time of writing.

Yep, economics 101 - the greater the demand, the higher a price can go without consumers caring (most). Best Buy just beat everyone else to the sweet spot.

These are really nice prices for HD-DVD players, and I like competition between stores.

I really wouldn't buy an HD player right now, even if I had a HDTV. The movies cost too much.

HD content isn't worth a 50%+ price premium.

Actually another thing to look at is the falling prices of HDDVDs.
Currently they range anywhere from $15-30.

However, they are expected to fall in price next year and be cheaper than blue ray.

Looking at bestbuy I see 30-35 for new releases. And thats at bestbuys "discount", usually $5.

It's illegal to advertise a price for a store and not be able to honor that price because something was out of stock, especially if it was seen as intentional

BestBuy tends to give very good prices on a lot of mid-line a/v equipment.
They are generally a little expensive on the really cheap and a little expensive on the really good.

Some of the deals make this go away for the time being. Wall mart for example has this player for much cheaper as part of a sale, as well as 20 or so HD-DVD titles at $15.... plus toshiba and some other HD-DVD backers have been running a buy a player, get 5 free movies deal for some time now (this player included, the xbox 360 HD-DVD drive included, etc.)

Other than the recent sales and things, I agree and I'm too poor to afford it anyways.

Walmart is selling the same HD-DVD Player tomorrow for $98.87. The only thing is that you probably need to start standing in line around 6-7am.

Even at 180 Bucks, thats alot of money for something that would take the place of a nice AMD cpu <G>. Not to mention, the movies are still expensive and I dont have a HD DVD burner
