ram defrag?

Saw it in the needed prog list, Why.. I never even heard of it let alone had a slowdown that I saw based on fragged ram? ANyone point me in a dirrection to get info? Google was little help? thanks
fyi, I understand the concept, but not the rellevence

Disk defrag is VERY important, pagefile defrag is important, and registry defrag is somewhat important, and memory defrag is just a product to sell to suckers.

RAM doesn't hold data long enough to fragment it!!!

You know the pagefile right? Well it's set as a system file and is constantly in use so normal defrag program don't touch it. What these programs do is run at bootup before the OS takes control of the pagefile and defrag it

I used to use cacheman back in the day to free up and defragment the RAM. It would do ok, generally netting me a bit more performance, but it's nearly useless today.

Abexo Memory Defragmenter, also called RAM defragmenter, RAM/memory booster, RAM/memory optimizer, etc. is a software to free up wasted RAM and report the free memory. Memory Defragmenter also prevents Windows crashes since Windows crashes mainly occur if there is no free memory (RAM). You can configure Memory Defragmenter to automatically free memory when the amount of available RAM falls below a certain value.

Erm...no. All it does is flush the RAM of stuff currently being used which actually decreases performance until it then reloads all of it back into memory.

The best way to "defrag" or "free up" memory is to restart.

Although really that's the only way.

Yeah that was a good program. I remember a problem poped up later though. Did it go payware or was it just XP incompatability or some thing ?..

Yeah, RAM defrag is rubbish. Defragging flash drives is also pretty much pointless since they have no moving parts, yet a lot of people seem to do it. Only mechanical harddrives benefit from defragging to improve performance, increase drive life over the long term, improve chances of data recovery etc. As long as we have Windows installed on conventional harddrives, I think defrag will be around

For instance, I guess I really had no idea and believed the hype and DL & am using a program called FreeRAM XP Pro... it's free, and was available on MajorGeeks (my main site for geekware), so I figured it can't be completely useless...
So it's completely worthless? If so I'm ditching that thing...

RAM defragging is a myth. It does not work at all. In reality most "RAM defrag" programs simply dump a majority of whats in your RAM into the Windows pagefile, which, of course, only being virtual memory actually slows your system down. Better to just restart your system in order to "defrag" your RAM.

I am not sure what happened to it. I was still using it when I had DDR1 ram, but after I got more than 1 gb, it became obsolete.

I tell you though, it did wonders for Max Payne 2 with only 256MB of ram.

HAha, I used to buy into this crap along time ago....glad to see I wisened up. Some of them programs ran like 20 bucks or more. Some of the system suites used to include memory defrag programs as well.

Bah, they give you 15 days to try it out and it didn't work at all with my system. It always failed to recover.

I've never used any RAM defrag before - I have the same setiment that it's just best to restart the system.

Although, if you don't like to restart the system, and just want to free up some RAM after you close out programs: FreeRAM XP Pro shareware

It works great at freeing crap out of the memory that WIN doesn't fully unload after you close a program. On occasion, it slows things up just a tiny bit if you already have other programs running and opened, but from my experience on my system, it's negligible. It's best to give it a run after you've closed everything out - before benchmarking, before opening up a game, etc . . .
