Maze4 works just fine on a HD3870

I just got bored and thought I'd put my HD3870 back in the loop. I had read that the Maze4 and Maze5 had the same mounting patern, so I decided to give it a try.

Just thought I'd take a few pictures of the handywork , and basically inform those who own these HD3870's not to break the bank, and hunt down some older Maze4's to cool your cards!

The core in all her nekidness

The core side of the PCB for those who dont want to take off their coolers.

The Danger Den install video calls this the Nvidia backerplate.

The Maze4 installed ....good clearance as well, about a 1/2" from barbs to RAM sink.

My Visiontek in its original glory.

Lastly the rewards from just about an hour or two's worth of effort. Card Idles at 35*c and adds only 2*c to my CPU in the same loop.

Nice job! I really like the trend that GPU use their former mounting holes, makes life much easier.

You should mod the original shroud/fan combo to fit over the waterblock (with the gpu heatsink removed, obviously). That way you'll still be moving air over your vrms and vram.

Oh, and good work. I still need to get my 2900 on h2o.

With the hurricane of air moving in my Antec 900 Im really not too worried about the proximity of the airflow, as they never feel warm to the touch at stock volts. Plus Im not a fan of destroying/modding the factory fan , in case of sale later!

Thanks for all the good remarks, and hopefully there is an easier way soon to come for voltmods other than soldering Vresisters to the card!

I want to , but I am still looking to see if there is a pencil mod in the works for the core. I just dont want to solder it as of yet....Core tops at 862, and with my DMM I only have 1.3V to the core as is, where others have 1.33V. Man I would really love a pencil mod to 1.5ishV see if the core would do 1000MHz like they do over at XS.

Be careful, that's a a kick ass OC, don't ruin the card.

If the pencil mod works out show us some more pics, keep up the good work!

Still stuck at 862? You do know there's an updated bios for the cards, right? There's a bug in the first cards' bioses that don't allow it to go past 862. ATI figured it out, and released a new bios for them.
