Plextor Unveils 5.25" Dual-Bay ODD DVD Writer
![]() Plextor unveiled the first space-saving Slim line optical drive solution for desktop PCs. The compact 'dual-bay' Plextor PX-DB600 enables two optical slim line drives to be positioned into the space of just one 5.25" drive bay - making it ideal for lifestyle chassis and small form factor Media Center PCs. Developed from their extensive experience in laptop opticals, the dual-layer multi-format (DVD+/-R and DVD-RAM) Plextor PX-608AL and the dual bay PX-DB600 (combined as the PX-DB608AL) enables greater flexibility and convenience for 'small footprint' PC-owners. For example, users can watch a DVD movie while burning other media to disc, and copy discs directly without saving to the hard disk first. The PX-DB608AL has the following writing speeds: DVD±R 8x, DVD±R DL 4x, DVD+RW 8x, DVD-RW 6x, DVD-RAM 5x, CD-R/RW 24x. It reads DVDs at 8x and CDs at 24x. The Plextor PX-DB608AL solution will be available from April 2007 at Plextor's network of dealers. It is covered by Plextor's Fast Warranty Service (2-year warranty in the EU, Norway and Switzerland (Collect & Return); other countries 1-year carry-in). Way too slow.
Optical storage discs suck anyway. ![]() Devices should read 32x DVD by now. Man, it´s 2007... I use PowerISO to create iso images from my most needed DVDs, cause I can´t stand it (the slow speed). |

Does it use S-ATA or IDE and does it need one or two data-cables?
"copy discs directly without saving to the hard disk first" in-hardware 1/1 copy ?!

Holy hell! this is awesome. And considering that DVDs look better and are in synch, when they are burned at a slower rating, quality should be very high. I applaud plextor for coming up with this. It serves the needs of everyone and 8X isnt really slow!

A dual-bay burner for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD would be cool ... and extremely expensive aswell

Ahhh...grave diggers!
Just google the model "PX-DB608AL" and you will find links to purchase. It seems only Europe, and cost around 90 pounds. |

i've got one of these, handy little device
![]() someone asked earlier about connections etc etc, well as you guys worked out it takes 2 laptop drives, the internal pc connections are IDE and are completely independant in relation to the data cables, but share the molex power connector. So if you hook them up to the same IDE channel your not going to see any real benefits. any problems with it so far? not really, if your pc has a habit of sucking air in around the drives anyway, then you have added a few extra places you need to hoover ! it's nice and shallow in the drive bay so no clearence issues, and looks good I have the plextor 608AL in mine (it's actually a re-badged pioneer drive) and an NEC Optiarc 7543 labelflash drive in the other slot, so it give me a nice combination of stuff (i also have a Plextor 716SA so have the bases well covered for now, if one drive doesnt like a certain media, one of the others will be fine with it )only issue i can see with it, is when it comes to removing the drives.... i havent actually worked out how to do this yet !! and have a feeling you might break the font bezel (which seems kinda cheap and tacky) if you force the issue |

ahhhhh.
i live in the UK, and if you were thinking of buying abroad and having them shipped, i would not pick the uk, prices here are higher than most other places ![]() if you know someone in the us military over here, you could get them to buy them and ship them to you all i can suggest is that you search the web, it looks like they were only really available in europe from plextor, but i am sure other solutions are available, just not plextor, like this ... http://cgi.ebay.com/Dual-2-Slim-DVD-...QQcmdZViewItem http://www.slidirect.com/web/do/pub/...oryId=10&id=40 EDIT, i found this site listing them in dollars .... but it seems ridiculously high ![]() http://www.span.com/catalog/product_...s¤cy=USD |

yup, the 608 is fairly quiet, not too slow for an 8x drive either, it's not as fussy on media as my 716sa either, all in all i think i made a good choice. and yes, for an HTPC box it is ideal, as you dont need the fastest DVD drive in there if 90% of the time your dropping retail discs into it. And the option to have a second drive without the space penalty should make this highly marketable for HTPC rigs, shame it's not a little better styled on the front, an aluminium bezel would have made it more desirable, but i'm more than happy with it @snafuthesane, no problem, hope you manage to get one
