New security forum?
The new NETWORKING forum is a great idea.
I dont want to encourage forum overkill - but a forum on "SECURITY" management, under the SOFTWARE category including: > Software Firewalls (hardware firewalls remain in Hardware/Networking) > Virus and Antivirus > Malware and utilities > Wireless security (wireless network hardware remains in Hardware/Networking) > User ACL > Filesystem ACL > Backupsoftware > Router remote access VPN, port blocking/forwarding etc. > Remote Desktop access/control RDC ... etc. would be very helpful. SECURITY is such a major issue, and is often very complex, or tricky to implement, like Active Directory, Remote Desktop, ACL etc. - that it deserves its own space - experts - and moderators. The poll is fixed, please vote again. -Wazzledoozle Last edited by lemonadesoda; Dec 13, 2007 at 11:39 PM. |

the poll should've been should we have the forum or not, not where to put it. also putting stuff about antivirus into networking isn't a good idea imo

i support it to the hilt
, actually anti virus was originally made for networks since you cant get many viruses from your own pc, and almost all of them come from the internet that is the biggest network of them all lol

I think this section is pretty much covered by that sticky thread with all the necessary software you should have. Thats full of AV, malware, spyware removal related programs. That pretty much covers that aspect of the subforum.
With regards to hardware based security that really does fall under the network category anyway. Why split it up further? |

I view anti-malware and security software as software, and networking as dealing with hardware and system communication closer to the hardware level.

its really just a persons take on what they see what networking actually is, since it is a mix of both hardware and software

Not to mention, you have to somehow keep TPU members from blowing a gasket when they screw up. If you succeed, nobody is the wiser, and you get some satisfaction out of knowing you did something good. If you fail, then everyone is on your case like nobody's business. Being a moderator is surprisingly unrewarding, unless you get super moderator powers and have a few giggles. But then again, those giggles only last until people higher up than you are have a problem with what you're doing....which they will. Basically? A moderator is like an unpaid babysitter who works for a lawyer.

firewalls sole purpose is to block incoming and outgoing network connections from your pc, this is used solely for a networking purpose and is used to control access to and from the network, so if its used to control access for the network then it must be for networks.

If someone seriously needed help with a virus issue or implementing security on their system it would be better placed in the software forum. Placing a security forum within the network category would mean that only network based security questions would belong, rather than the protection of their entire system as a whole. If the security forum were to form a whole new forum that would be somewhat improved, though the general software section seems to cater well for this already anyway... |

Edit: If i'm not clear, a forum JUST for security, AV, and etc, RIGHT BY the networking forum, but not inside it.
