I need an opinion on this PSU please.

This is the PSU in question:

http://www.simarksupplies.com/item.a...14&item=PSU021

I've put my POV 8600GTS 256MB for sale locally, and a guy wants to give me this PSU (which he claims has won in a gaming tournament and is brand new and sealed) in exchange for my card.

I'd have preferred cash but I didn't get reasonable offers...

I'm thinking that it is a good deal for me even though I don't have immediate need for a PSU, but I think having a PSU on standby is better than having an 8600GTS on standby... Also if I decide to build another pc, I might put that PSU in but I don't think I'd be putting the 8600GTS...

What do you think? What would you do if you were in my position? Should I grab up the offer?

It's OK, not the best,(doesn't need to be). It's not on anybodys list of "recomended" PSU's either. Can't be too picky though, due to your location.

Thanks for the answers. What I would like to know - if you were to have to make a choice between an 8600GTS 256MB used for 5 months, and a still sealed Xilence 800w which one would you take?

The prices here are outrageous as you perhaps already noticed. That PSU here is nearly double the price of that in the link given by Technicks.

Another thing, the 8600GTS 256MB bought new here costs approx $150.

Depends, can u use the 8600 in your kids computer. If not then get the PSU.

if the PSU has a long product life i will take it over the 8600 - purely because a 800W PSU is more future proof

Namslas: My kid's pc got an AGP slot in the mobo, definitely no 8600GTS in there unless the old ECS gives up. It's showing signs of giving up, but then would I be buying another mobo with an AGP slot?

Whitelotus: your post makes sense, an 800W PSU is more future proof than a video card.
