Buying new HDTV - advice

Hey guys.

A new HDTV shall be bought in this household by the new year and umm...iam not sure what I should be looking for?

Could someone please give me some advice?

Here is a monitor that I am looking at..please point out whats good and whats not good about this:

for you ps3...two things to look for.

1) 1080p
2) HDMI

Lower response times are also better. Keeps fast paced action smooth, no smearing. Gaming PC monitors in the 17-22" sizes look for around 2ms. Dunno how well the larger sizes keep up with that however.

Yeah, definately 1080P resolution (1920x1080) and HDMI for the PS3.

Most of the big screens I've looked at had response times around 8ms. 8ms would be the max to look for, 5ms would be better. I had a 32" 16ms screen for about a week....it SUCKED in BF2, the smearing and ghosting was unbelievably bad.
The new set is 8ms and I can honestly say I've NEVER seen ghosting with this set.

Could you specify if you are wanting an HDTV or a High Resolution monitor. They are, in my mind, mutally exclusive.
If you wanted an HDTV for movie viewing/picture quality, I would stay away from LCD. But if you're on a budget, I understand how appealing they can be.

The only fixed-pixel display technology I would go for (for an HDTV) would be plasma. This again would not be my first choice.
If you've ruled out a 300lb CRT tube (my personal favorite), then Sony's SXRD tech is the best in my eyes (for panels or projectors) followed by DLP or any other rear projection tech. I am very sensitive to "screen door effect" that is present on all fixed-pixel displays. The larger the screen size the more apparent it becomes until you back away from the display to the point that you can't see the black lines surrounding each pixel.

...but you most likely just want a monitor in which case, ignore the above blubbering!

Yes please answer the question above bc that makes quite a big difference.
If you are looking for an HDTV the three big companies that are ahead of everyone else is Samsung, Sony and Sharp.
Of course there are cons with all of these.

Sony - Very expensive and may have clouding issues.
Samsung - Some sets are reporting tearing issues
Sharp - Most sets report a noticable Banding issue which has been plagueing them

Of course you can get a second tier brand or go with less expensive brands such as:
1. LG
2. JVC
3. Toshiba

These brands are obviously cheaper, but doesnt have the quality support the top three have and lack some features as well.

Well umm..I am unsure about the price...but I wish it to be around 1200 Euros if possible.

Well umm..I want it for the PS3 and my family want it for movies!

For a PS3...what should I be looking for??

look at home theatre stores they are clearencing everything out...mitsu DLP tvs are really cheap right now

Most of the above...ive no idea what they mean....is this actualy 720p??

there are stores that just sell home theatre stuff basiclle recievers and tvs try and find a local one of those and pic up a mitsubitshi DLP TV they are 1080P sets and right now since everything is being marked down you can pick one up really cheap

ahhhh yes ok I get you. I do not beleave there is a store with that name here! There is a store called Electrical store which sells alot of things and alot of tvs.

iam unsure when my mother will go and have a look at them....I better go with her!

I just got a 26 samnnsung hdtv, coming from a Fat screen tv of the same screen size all i can say is WOW! hd is the way to go lol halo3 looks absolutely amazing withhd on 1080i, when i tried 1080p it went all werid is this because my tv doesnt have it?

I have a panisonic 42 and a panasonic 50 plasma...and i could not be happier.. 2 hdmi ports each and a really good picture
