Motherboard and hard drive vs. XP

My dads having a difficult time putting XP onto his computer after having his motherboard flashed. He will insert the xp boot disc once he starts the computer and the boot disc begins loading the drivers will begin to install so that he can format the hard disk, but before all of them are complete there will be a flash of BSOD then the computer will restart. I thought this could have been a memory problem but he said the motherboard and memory worked fine with XP before the bios update, then i thought it could have been a bad flash but you get the usual bios beep when it loads. Any ideas, and how do you set up a sata as master and IDE as slave? just set the IDE to slave and put the sata in?

You can install XP to SATA or PATA.
Check your mobos condensors.See whether one is blasted/damaged or increased in volume.Usually it will create these failures.

honestly i found the easiest way to do the whole install thing was tp put it on a IDE and copy it over to my SATA after it was installed with all the correct drivers it also left me with a full backup of my system

I didn't need a floppy for my old nforce 4 SLI board, but this ATI chipset board doesn't work unless I force the SATA controller into PATA mode, even with a floppy.
