I think i made a big mistake!!

While in the strive for a better overclock i decided to turn off my computer and ( let the chip get back to room tempture), I then pulled off my Zalman 9700 from my Q6600 and noticed that only 1/2 of the cpu was aking contack with my HSF. I then scraped off the excess and put new AS5 on it. I didn't clean out the entire cpu or hsf, just the excess with a credit card. I then applied enough to cover the cpu and some on the HSF.

Now when i try to run OCCT (like Prime95) it goes 2 or 3 seconds then reboots. Is there a reason for this. Or am i supposta actully remove all of the AS5 before reapplying AS5 to it?

It made logical sense when i did it.

Best thing to do is clean it all up and then apply new TIM. Then reset HS. Then pull the HS back off and check for proper coverage or "over-spill", adjust and continue. Also double check the HS to ensure its seated properly.

Your CPU is def. overheating.
You have to clean all of it off and then re apply when you take it off.

I would say get 95% alcohol and have patience.
It takes a bit of time to clean off.
I know they say 70% or better, but 70% takes even longer.
I know newegg sells some remover stuff that works even better if you want to wait a bit.

what type of alcohol? I doubt its the drinking kind.

Also i think i'll lap the cpu and hsf this time around after im done with cleaning it all off.

Whats weird is in every temp program i can run tells me the temps are in the low 30's
In BIOS it says 40 for the cpu, and the MCP is in the 50's

You shouldn't need to lap the cpu or HSF.

Use 95% rubbing alcohol, its like $2 from the grocery store or pharmacy, and cotton balls to wipe it clean. After you clean it, put the new AS5 on, and reset the HSF. Remember, you only need a small amount of the AS5 on the cpu for it to provide sufficient coverage.

as everyone else has said, use some iso alcohol or articlean to clean up everything and reapply a thin layer of tim. too little or too much tim is a bad thing, you have to hit the sweetspot.

Go to you local chemist/drugstore and ask for "Isopropyl Alcohol" also known as rubbing alcohol or IPA.

500ml (approx 1 pint) will cost £4-6 and that should last you many years.

isopropanol or isopropyl you can buy it at your local pharmacy, the problem is you didn't seat the heatsink properly in the first place, make sure you do it correctly.

i dont think its as simple as overheating.. its unstable.. your overclock isnt right..

way too much unimportance is attached to very small amounts of heat variation and meticulous application of whatever magic compound u are into.. and as u say your temp readouts are okay.. something else is wrong..

its also possible u have damaged the cpu by not seating the heatsink properly the first time.. the first thing to do is slow things down.. then work back up to a stability point..

I took it all apart and cleaned both the HSF and the CPU till they looked brand new. I noticed now that when i took it off a second time, did a dry fit i figured out that both the HSF and the CPU are concave in shape and that there is a huge gap in the middle from what i can think of (based on what i had seen). Anyways now temps on stock are in the low 30c's.

As for other things i found out there is a hole in the FSB between 3.3-3.5 Ghz, which is strange. Has anyone ever gotten a stable overclock at 3.6 GHz on air?
