Sony BMG to Drop DRM

Sony BMG has become the last of the ‘big four’ record labels to drop Digital Rights Management – on part of its music collection at least. Specific details have not yet been released, so this could potentially apply to all of the songs that Sony offers for download. Digital Rights Management is the technology that limits users to playing songs only on certain computers and devices, and has been the subject of fierce opposition over recent months. Warner, EMI and Universal have all made plans for DRM-free downloads, and Sony is set to launch its DRM-free downloads in the first quarter of this year.

I had sonicstage for the longest time because of the fact that I had a Sony MP3 player. But after hdd failing and lost my laptop to my ex, I couldn't get the music that I bought off Sonicstage anymore... 389 songs at 99 cents each.. You do the math
Thank god that its gone!!!!

There is no doubt that Sony saw sales of non DRM music rocketing whilst DRM laden music sales have diminished, rest assured if Sony hadn't had its recent DRM related lawsuits Sony would have been the last to remove DRM from their music media, this is more power to the consumer rather than a pat on the back for MR Sony for doing the right thing.

It's meant to mean the same as:

on at least part of its music collection

just the word order is different.

Just to add further clarity to "at least part of its music collection":

1./ Music only, no change to DRM on other media, ie. video

2./ Only PART of the music collection, not all music.

3./ Only some CHANNELS of distribution, not all distribution channels

4./ Removing some of the restrictions/limitations on compatibility/transfer/backup. SONY MP3/ATRACK is NOT going "open"! (sadly)
