The SAPPHIRE HD 3870 ATOMIC version features an exciting new single slot cooler – the first in the world to feature Vapor-X – SAPPHIRE’s implementation of Vapour Chamber Technology (VCT). This advanced cooling solution provides more efficient and quieter cooling allowing the ATOMIC edition to ship overclocked out of the box, and to allow enthusiasts even more scope for performance tuning. The SAPPHIRE HD 3870 ATOMIC has 512MB of high performance GDDR4 memory, clocked at 1200MHz (2.4GHz effective) and the GPU core is pre-overclocked at 825MHz. Supporting the new CrossFireX technology, two high speed connectors on each card allow 2, 3 or even 4 graphics cards to be daisy-chained together for enhanced performance when installed in a CrossFireX mainboard.

Newegg.com had these for $299.99 +sh last week and it's out of stock now. I bet they'll step-up the price by at least 20% with the next stocks.

I feel this card is a boon for those CrossFire X potential-buyers who would choose motherboards with closely stacked PCI-E slots (and also where the PCI-E slots are adjecent to eachother, dual-slot cards won't fit). The cooler is advertised to work well in these scenarios.

The packaging reminds me of the ATI Radeon X1950 XTX Uber Edition (pair of two cards in a briefcase)

Meh, I think I'll just settle for some other brand. Paying $299 simply for the name ATOMIC, shiny briefcase, and small overclock seems ridiculous to me. Oh and I forgot its single slot, better to just get a vf900 or some other uber cooler for $40-$50 and REALLY push the clock speeds to their limits.

Wonderful review! If these can be found for a decent price, I would love two in crossfire, perhaps even more than a single 3870x2. I wonder how many of these Sapphire is going to make?

On page 4-A Closer Look, you state that:

"The GDDR3 memory chips are made by Samsung and carry the model number K4U52324QE-BC08. With 0.8ns they are the fastest GDDR3 memory chips available on the market today and should be able to handle at least 1250 MHz (if the memory controller in the GPU can handle that speed)."

If I'm not mistaken, these are GDDR4 from what I've read up on
