Question regarding 8400-passiveish cooling

Hi, have been putting together a theoretical computer (theoretical because i keep changing it and wont have $ until late feb) heres the current specs
case-P182 (already bought)
ram-2x1gb corsair xms2 5 5 5 12 800mhz (also bought)
motherboard-Asus P5k-E w/ wifi
CPU-E8400
psu-corasir cmpsu-620hx 620w
dvd drive-samsung 20x dvd +-R w/ lightscribe
gfx card-thinking about getting a cheap 50$ card and check prices for 9*00 series but otherwise thinking PNY 8600gt 512 gddr3
HDD-WD caviar SE16 320gb 7200rpm 16mb

ok onto the question after noobishly posting noob specs
the goal is to oc to aprox 3.5ghz (would be first oc ever... so probably toast the chip but ignoring that)
would a thermalright ultra-120 extreme (60$us) be worth it as passive cooling or would people generally suggest a different cooler with a near silent fan?

if different, what? xD

thanks for reading this far, if you have any suggestions they are greatly appreciated (in regards to any part of my post)

I would want active cooling if you are going to be doing any kind of OCing. You may want to check this out http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103026
I would use that and 1 or 2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811999072
That would be almost silent and give you a little airflow over the HS and give cooling to the mobo at less the cost.

simply put you cannot in any way shape or form overclock with passive cooling. overclocking turns your computer into a miniture heater and it needs serious cooling or chit will fry and fast.

your only silent option is to look into an immursion cooling tank where the motherboard sits in a glass case filled with mineral oil totally submerged.

fit an artic pro cooler.. silent with its fan running slow and will cool the e8400 without the slightest problem at 3.5 gig.. it goes there on default vcore..

this chip sets new rules.. at its default vcore it runs very cool for those who dont have one..

trog

ps.. one of these and a grafix card fan that chucks its heat out of the back of the case and the unbelievable happens.. your case is no longer a mini heater.. least mine aint..

That chip will probably do 4GHz with 1.3v. 1.3v won't put out much heat. Just take the highish temps with a grain of salt, as the probe has a defect and reads low temperatures like 30C slightly higher like 35C
