50 - 55c a safe overclock?
Hey guys.
Just wondering if 50-55c is safe for the CPU? Am I doing long term damage to this CPU? |

It is safe to run up to 85c on C2Ds I know... but I always get scared at anything over 60c. My answer is that is high for that type of CPU... but I think you will be fine.

50-55c should be plenty fine on a CPU, just keep it below 60C (my highest target, and preference goal to stay below). And the damage that temp does won't probably be noticed until years after you've sold it imo.

I get 48-51c idle..surfing the web and stuff like that.
50-55c while gaming. Such as COD4, Supreme Commander. I will buy a new CASE in a month or too..brother has the same rig as me and overclocked to 3.0Ghz also..he gets 42c TOPS..which is outstanding! he has an AEROCOOL Extreme Engine case. So I will have to buy one of them

BUT if you really think about it, you will probably want a new cpu in the next couple of years anyway...well, I would. AND like the others have said, 50-55 degrees in safe. |

55c should be fine. My tolerance is anything under 60c will be fine for a few years. Now if your running 24/7 F@H, it may be a shorter life than that.

i think it should be fine. but i don't like to see my CPU hit 40c under 100% load.

The only thing that would really test this rig would be playing games.
I only surf the web, PC gaming...thats about it

If I got a new case and temps are no higher than 42c full load...would I be able to overclock some more?

That's a good way to look at it! Depends on your hardware, but the looks of your hardware leads me to believe you can get some more out of it if you can get those temps down a tad.

If you have multiplier go down when idle, then it's even better. Mine is 70C (coretemp, 55C speedfan) on load and this CPU has been on 9months 24/7. But it runs on 2GHz most of the time, because of the C1E, so I'm not worried even slightest. Your is 6 series, so it should run lower temps, like it is

most newer Intels (that I know of) have a tendancy to clock themselves down in some form - sometimes it'll buggar an OC, sometimes it won't (for example, my P4 vCore will drop considerably at idle). If this is the case, the only time you'll really be stressing the CPU due to an OC will be under full load (i.e. gaming).
You should still defi be alright with those temps, though.

Have you run Orthos/Prim95 ?? Let those babies run for a bit and then see if your temp still is at 50-55. Run the small FFT's (the CPU stress test).

But, for me though, it's personal preference. I just prefer the knowledge that my OCed CPU is still 100% accurate.
