3DMark06 Noob ?, & Stinkin' hot GPU
O.K., so what is to be my new gaming rig is together, with A64x2 5600+ and X1900XTX GPU. Problem is, the GPU is running too hot- artifacts and crashing when gaming. I make it through 3DMark06 (barely, I think, since I'm getting artifacts there too, and the GPU hits 82 degrees & still rising.)
So first question is, how crappy is 5911 for my system (as a pre-OC baseline) Is it just telling me what I already know- The system would be happier if I had a better GPU? Or is something else wrong? Second, it looks like I need an after-market VGA cooler. I'd like a Accelero S1, but no one has 'em in stock. From what I'm seeing on various reviews, even the Zalman VF1000 would be marginal for this beast of a card, especially since I was planning on OC'ing the card a bit so it wouldn't be such a choke point. Is there something else out there I should be considering? Thoughts, O TechPowerUp Gurus?? Last edited by RottnJP; Feb 16, 2008 at 08:26 PM. |

The 1900xtx does run very hot as standered..
Dont know whats with the artifacting though..? Is it O/C'd ? Is it new or used.? If used did the previous owner O/C it and may have damaged it..? nearly 6 grand is an average for that set up. I used to score just under 5 grand with a AMD 48oo+ and the 1900xtx with 2 gig of corsair.. apart from the artifacting i would say thats about right.. |

my 1900xtx ran at 90 C happily for over a year before i finally sold it.. sounds like yours might be faulty or failing..
they are meant to run that hot.. if its old check the heat sink isnt blocked.. they have very fine fins and soon block.. trog ps.. mine scored about 6700 in 2006 with the amd dual core cpu at 3.3 gig.. about 5800 with a single core sandy at 3 gig.. ps. 2.. they dont clock up that much.. the xtx comes overclocked out of the box.. the xt will clock up to near xtx speeds but thats about all..

All right- Thanks for the quick replies. I think that confirms she's damaged goods.
A gaming buddy gave it to me when he upgraded. He didn't OC it, but ran it 24/7 since new, basically. When I got it I cleaned it out & remounted it with AS5, but I cleared enough dust out of there for a couple of small furry creatures. So, seeing how hot this thing is *clean* it wouldn't surprise me he cooked the crap out of it without realizing it. He also said he thought it was running hot & needed a new cooler, but it looks like the damage is done. I forgot to mention- I start getting artifacts within 5 seconds or so of the first heat-up cycle on ATI Tool. D'oh! So if it's supposed to be able to handle the temps I'm seeing, I guess it's time to start shopping. |

ic that you've applied as5, i would seriously consider the fact you may be shorting something out because of it, as5 conducts electricity, i've always stayed away from as5 when it comes to gpu's and used ceramique instead, works pretty much the same imho. remove the hsf, clean all traces of as5 off and replace with either ceramique or a very careful application of as5, i'd just stay away from it in your instance though

Yeah, wouldn't hurt to try that. I was careful, but you never know. I didn't have any ceramique, but a lil tube of that is cheaper than a new card. On the other hand, a new card is a new card... "I didn't have any choice, honey- that one was shot. Umm.... Could even have started a fire! Yeah, that's the ticket!"

What's the 9600GT supposed to bring to the table? Price/performance? The quick search I did makes it look like a 8800GTS 512 ought to spank it like a naughty little schoolgirl. (Mmmm... Naughty schoolgirls...)
If the G94 is going to be at the mid-range for the next few weeks, I can't see it doing anything for me- won't even exert any downward price pressure on anything above 8600 family... |

i would say a real life 70% gain in gaming performance.. the 2006 score exaggerates the real gain a bit.. "honey i need a new grafix card" is about right.. he he trog
