xfx 8600 gts xxx vs xfx 8800GS Alpha Dog XXX

Hi,

I am debating buying a graphics card, and have found these four links I like:
Amazon
ebuyer
epcbuyer
scan

1. What do you thing of the cards/prices charged?
2. Could I get a significantly better card for the price range?
3. Which, overall, would you recommend i buy?

cheers,

Simon

The 8800GS destroys the 8600GTS. Pretty much anything nowa days does. Wait for the 9600GT tho.

Cheers!

The only thing I wasn't sure about was that the GS in the 8800GS usually means the card is not as good as say a GT or GTS. What difference does the "Alpha dog xxx" part make?

XFX's Alpha Dog line is the G92 8800's.

+1 for the 8800 GS.
Noisy but good performances for the price and good overclocking capacities with Riva Tuner ( v 2.06 ).

Cheers for the tips, everyone!

Looking at other threads on the forums, i am seeing that the xfx version may not be the best choice available... does this make any real technical difference? Is there anything you would particularly recommend?

One more question: How would I go about overclocking? I have never done it before, and have heard quite alot about it going wrong...

In case it's useful, my system specs are:

Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 motherboard
Athlon 64 3200+ CPU
2 x 17" 1280*1024 res monitors
1GB Kingston PC3200 DDR RAM (2*512)

No soucy with the XFX 8800 GS : good OC potential and low cost ( don't buy XXX version, the " normal " version can be OC easy ).
For OC : use Riva Tuner v. 2.06 updated ( for G92 GPUs ).
A better heat sink as the Zalman 900 is a good way to performance in silence.

just a quick thought... would i be better off SLIing two lower spec graphics cards (say 8600gt's) instead of the one 8800gs?

Actually, not sure if mobo supports it... never mind!

It's generally best to stick to one good card than SLI'ing 2 lesser cards. Why?well there's the whole performance thing, and also less trouble. Compatibility etc.

your going to have to do the whole "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" thing with ubuntu. typically works well with nvidia cards.

follow this guide:
