Blue Mars: Crysis Meets Second Life
Avatar Reality Inc., a new development entity dedicated to the advancement of online community building, today announced it will provide a sneak preview of its upcoming massively multiplayer virtual world (MMVW), Blue Mars, at the 2008 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, Booth 418 in the West Hall Career Pavilion. Set in Terraformed Mars in the year 2177 AD, Blue Mars will feature stunning graphics, realistic characters and endless gaming attractions that will allow players to build and simulate real-life scenarios by creating personalized characters, or avatars. The MMVW will launch in a public beta version at the end of 2008. At GDC, Avatar Reality will conduct an interactive tour of Blue Mars attractions which highlight breathtaking graphics through the utilization of CryTek’s game middleware CryENGINE 2. Additionally, they will preview their scripting game development environment which enables third party developers to easily build rich 3D casual games, and their proprietary Avatar Technology, which enables realistic character appearance and animation.

Hey, finally a game where people can make decent looking models on an engine that looks like it's a decade old.

The graphics engine doesnt look as good as the original CryEngine, I assume this one is for normal consumers, that have a midrange system. Still looks nice though!
Its good that game makers are concentrating on graphics engines that are very efficient, and are mindful of the fact that not everyone has a high end GPU....

People who spend countless hours in a virtual world like this, are no different than people who cloister themselves in a computer room for endless hours playing any MMO (WOW, EverCrack, whatever). Do not be too judgemental if you fit into that category.
That being said, unless there is some sort of competition against either a computer AI or other players, I cannot begin to understand the mindset. Go out and meet real people and see real sights if you simply want social interaction. It's far more gratifying.

I never implied that there was anything wrong with either. What I meant was that both can be viewed as a virtual alternate reality. What is done in the reality is irrelevant. To spend countless hours in a reality where you kill monsters, and then belittle people who spend hours in a reality where you do not, is disingenous and hypocritical.

Please, tell that to IBM. Everytime I hear about them making another "move" into the world of Second Life, I shudder.

How is WoW not a pretend world? I've played WoW since closed beta and it most certainly is a pretend world, a way to get out of reality.

What other people do in THEIR lives is THEIR choice and you have NO right to judge them in any way shape or form.
THAT is hypocritical. |

WOW those screenshots do look gorgeous. Just as this generation of vid cards are struggling with crysis, next generation will be at the same level once this comes out me thinks.
