Help with finding good program

I wanted to make a copy of one of my DVD's and I was wondering what program works best with ripping DVD's to a hard drive then...what program works the best with shrinking the files down.

Please understand that I will not be breaking any copyright laws with this project. Any help would be much appreciated.
