are you implying by saying SLI and Crossfire after each that you'll be going with 2 cards?
it would make more sense to invest in one better card

edit* And definitely a better cpu

3870 should have a crossfire oc edition, that I know of. You couldnt go wrong with that, as their drivers tend to be a bit better and youll spend as much on that as the 9600GT. However, I hear Palits 9600 GT (original and Sonic) are pretty damn awesome cards. Id go HD 3870, but the 9600 GT is a worthy card itself.

Uhhh the 9600GT is slower than the HD 3870. I would get the 3870 cause they are monster overclockers and Crossfire scales a hella lot better than SLi if you get a CF board down the road.

Yes, but two 9600's in SLi scale very, very well! Best Sli setup you can get.

Just look at TheGoat Eaters score on my 3d06 compilation! I'm still waiting on some new GTX Sli scores.

Out of those cards whatever is cheapest. Think of it this way, new video cards are out on the average of every 6 months anyways.

I'd tell you to choose the 8800GT as well.
The reason is that I have that card and know what it delivers on a resolution of 1680x1050 and am pretty pleased.

I don't know if your present processor would be bottlenecking it though.

If not I'd be suggesting (even though you don't mention it) the successor of the 8800GT which is the 8800GTS 512MB. There shouldn't be much of a price difference. On low resolutions that card performs on par with the 8800GTX.

^ seconded

I mean, I'd probably splash for the 9800GTX if I had the cash..but as I don't, I'd recommend the 8800GTS as well for above reasons

this might help alittle

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=55290

Its a few tests I ran on a 9600GT and a 3870. The 3870 did come ahead by just alittle, and honestly those two cards are almost identical in terms of performance.

I think you should base your desicion by chipset, if you have an Intel/AMD - go ATI, if you have Nvidia go Nvidia.

Both cards will do good, actually very good. If I had to choose between the two, I would say 3870, I have 2 of them! Great cards, beautiful image quality, low power consumption. Good card

The 8800GT is certainly faster than the 3870. Not true with the 9600GT. Trust me on this, and check 3dmark06 scores on the 9600GT vs. 3870.
