NVIDIA to Use Hynix GDDR3 for GeForce 9800 GTX
VR-Zone has learned that NVIDIA is planning to add Hynix as a second memory supplier for GeForce 9800 GTX. All current GeForce 9800 GTX graphics cards including the overclocked models are equipped with Samsung K4J52324QE 0.8ns GDDR3 memory chips. A second batch of 9800 GTX cards is now being reported to enter the market with Hynix HY5RS123235BFP 0.8ns GDDR3 parts and different BIOS version.

i always liked hynix, always got good overclockes, i remember my hynix 2.8ns ram on my 5900XT, it ran stable at 1000mhz or 500x2 for those that like to make silly arguments. My 6600GT also had hynix and i got the ram to 1200mhz on that.

Or they don't want to rely entirely on Samsung for memory shipments. Perhaps Samsung can't handle the quantity on 0.8ns RAM. Or nVidia is bringing in the second company so the two have to compete. Competition leads to better prices.

I bet it is because they are cheaper! They have the same rating, I don't see how the hynix can be faster...
My eyes wanted to read "nVidia to use Hynix GDDR4.." but neah, it seems they're going to milk the GDDR3 cow till the last drop.

They are just cost-reducing the remaining stuff on the PCB even further at this point before 9800GX2/9800GTX go EOL this July. That's all.

Why shouldn't they stick with GDDR3? This RAM is just as fast as the GDDR4 used on the 3870.

well if GDDR3 can go this fast why not?
Remember the 1ghz DDR cards back in the day, well at least the oc'd ones that hit that speed? The latancy was lower and memory preformance is always better at lower DDR model compared to higher DDR model at the same speed. GDDR2 has lower lat than GDDR3. Though DDR2 on graphics chips im not sure of |

They haven't EOL'd the 9800 GX2, that is still a rumor, and this isn't a bad thing so what are you getting in a huff about.

hynix makes some great ics. I dont see why everyone is shanking them on that. This is pretty good actually.
I dont know if GDDR3 is as fast as Gddr4, but then again, I dont know much about the differences between the two and how gddr4 and gddr5 is supposed to be better than gddr3.

Hynix has often had better overclockers as far as video RAM chips with identical ratings in the past, but as always we should wait to see reports of real world results after users get their hands on stuff.

I believe the ASUS TOP 3870X2 uses hynix memory which currently holds the 3DMark06 world record.
