My DVD drive doesnt read DVD's anymore..

I just bought Hitman on dvd and like half way through the movie it got really skippy and eventually froze to where I had to ctrl alt del media player classic. Now it wont even read game discs and I dont see it under my computer.. Is it dead or what?

BTW nothing was overheating while watching it and my CPU was at like 3% load.

its this drive btw

I had this happened... what I did was remove the drive's drivers from my computer by going to start, hover over my computer, right click and click manage. I then removed the drivers, and rebooted. The computer recognized it, and reinstalled, and it worked.

HERE:

Click uninstall (obviously)

Here are some things you could try:
(Don't do them all at once. Check if it works after each step).

1) Check out if using another software to play the dvd's and cd's will work. Ie if you've been using Nero, check if it works with Windows Media Player, or google for some other freeware.

2) Right-click on the drive in My Computer. Is it reading properly or is it saying that the disk is full even when you know the disk isn't?

3) If you double-click on the drive, can you access it now?

4) Check that your IMAPI service is running through Control Panel / Administrative Tools. If in doubt enable all Microsoft services.

5) Run Windows Autoplay Repair Wizard

6) Update the drivers for the DVD Rom and the IDE drivers;

7) Swap DVD drive with that from another pc if you have one available;

8) Update the firmware of the drive;

9) Check the bios controlling that it is in IDE mode;

10) Try using a different IDE slot;

11) Try using a new IDE cable;

12) Remove SecuRom and Starforce from the registry and from the device manager, if you have them;

13) Underclock cpu, ram and gfx to stock clocks if you're oc'ing;

14) Modify the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives\Volume{bc1eb9fa-d7ec-11dc-9722-806d6172696f} to read 2.

15) Delete upper and lower filters from here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

16) Re-install Windows through Windows Repair;

17) Do a fresh re-install of Windows.

EDIT: lol I spent so much time typing this out that in the meantime you solved your problem!
Congrats!
