How important is a good PSU?
A m8 of mine is gradually buying parts for his new PC (that Im going to build for him) He wants it to be an SLi system and he has already purchased an 'Asus A8N-SLI nForce 4 Skt939' and a 'ThermalTake Tsunami Dream' case, but hes unsure of what PSU to go for as he wants to get that next
Hes going to get a 7800GT (or maybe 2) for this system as well as an 'AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego' so I think the PSU has to be quite powerful & reliable? He was going to grab a cheap PSU like mine: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Product...7047&GroupID=9 But I told him to wait till I spoke to you guys (to be honest Ive had no trouble with this PSU, but I did only get it because I was desperate at the time as my old PSU blew and I was short of cash )Would my PSU be any good to him or should he spend the extra £££'s and get a half decent one?

You need something reliable if your going to build a high end system. If your wattage or amperage drops in a critical point your not going to be a happy camper.

A good PSU is like a good gearbox in a car. You might have a lot of horsepower but if your gearbox can't take it then you are not going to be going anywhere.....

Shamelessly pasted from an earlier post of mine:
It's also a good idea to have a decent PSU that will supply at least 16A on the 12v rail regardless of wattage. A "modest" 350W PSU that has these specs is a much better choice than a 600W monster that can't push 12 amperes through 12 volts. Those ratings usually appear on the specs sticker on the unit itself. Brand names can be misleading; many manufacturers of quality PSU's also make cheap ones so caveat emptor (thinking of Antec here). Personally I use Enermax PSU's because they don't have a "value" line of products. Even their most affordable units are quality ones and they aren't that much more expensive than mainstream PSU's. Bottom line is don't let the wattage rating be your only criteria, check amperage versus voltage especially on the 12v rail. Wattage is a measure used by manufacturers to determine how many components their product can theoretically feed power to simultaneously but this doesn't tell you anything about the intensity of the current (measured in amperes) which is the main stability factor. Antec
Tagan Seasonic Pc Power & Cooling Enermax The above are great psu's....I'd say he needs a 550 watt at least with a minimum of 24A on the 12v rail. |

dont forget Fortron,
2 small issues, a good PSU is a must, tell that to my poor 9800SE@9800PRO, now deceased, a cheap 12 euro 420watt PSU killed it with a 12.8V 12v line, and my brother, whos 350watt PSU was apparently unable to feed a 2.5" usb drive, the other issue is read the small print, alot of PSU“s try to flash and impress with nice high watt and amp values, make sure those are sustained values, not peak, my fortron source is a 350watt sustained 420 peak PSU, it takes a beating, has PFC, feeds 2 harddrives, a 3200+ Athlon64, DVD burner, CD burner and a X850XT, and take in to account that a no brand 550watt cant do that |
