overclocking Geil PC2-6400 Ultra CAS 4-4-4-12

Hi guys,

Did any of you guys own/overclocked some Geil PC2-6400 Ultra CAS 4-4-4-12 ram?

Currently I have 4x1Gb of these geil ddr2 800 sticks and I reached the maximum stable overclock from 940Mhz @ 2.3V.

On the geilusa website they say: "Working Voltage : 1.9-2.3V "

Actually I'd like to push my ram just a very small amount further, but I guess I would need 2.4V for that...

Would I send my Geil sticks straight to heaven when I inject them with 2.4V?

Or would they also run happy at 2.4V?

Thanks for a reply

I think running them at 2.4v without active cooling, like a fan sitting on top of them would be a bad idea. have you tried pushing them further at you current voltage?

I think you may be able to push a little harder, but that is *completely* dependent on your temps at this point! If you're pushing 50-60 degrees C than forget it, you shouldn't even be running 2.3 right now *lol*! If they're fried, the company will know that you pushed the volts too hard, and won't RMA the sticks ... even if they are lifetime warrantied.

You can buy active cooling solutions for RAM, from various vendors like:

OCZ
ThermalTake

They all work very well, I have an OCZ kit in all of my systems. Knocked 10 degrees C off my ram temps, easy!

All depends on the look you like, and how much room you have around your RAM area. I have a tight fit on my ASUS board, the cooler is 'sandwiched' between my CPU cooler and power/ez-plug connections. Though, there is no pressure anywhere, just a tight fit !

Oops, I mean 960Mhz, with 4-4-4-12 timings and they run at a temp of 42 degrees celsius.

I I tried 970, went ok for a while but then suddenly a bsod and once restarted the pc and speed a little bit lower it worked for a while but then suddenly the system went down even without any error

And yes I have 1 small fan at 3000rpm sticked on the ram sticks, that lowers the temps a few degrees.

These sticks won't run over 900Mhz at 2.1V
Maybe at 5-5-5-12?
(Dunno, did not try that.)

My ram temps are @ 40-43 degrees C, they don't run that much warmer then at 800 with 2.1V. (was around 38 C at 800).

So you think its all about the temperature and I they should be able to run at 2.4?

(I RMA d my previous geil set 2x1gb pc8500ultra cas 4.. 1 bad stick.. Those sticks could run at 3-3-3-9 @ 2.5V ) I could buy almost 3 sets of pc6400 for the same price and almost same performance too
