Monitor "ms" question

Hello,

I have 5ms 22in LG and want to put a stop to locking framerates in games. I can't stand to see screen tearing, so what monitor do I purchase to handle the output from the GPU without playing catch-up??

It must be LCD or TFT as I don't have the room for CRT. If anyone knows of a 22inc CRT with a small backside, let me know.

Regards,
Nigel

My spec is as follows:

Asus M3N-HT Deluxe Mobo
XFX-9800GTX
Coolermaster 1000 Cosmos
XP Media Center 32
G25 Wheel
9850 2.5G CPU OC to 2.9G
1TB Storage

I don't want to hold back the graphics card anymore, so I need to know which is THE best screen to purchase to keep up with my 9800GTX. I don't want to enable vsync.

Thats right, enable vertical-synchronization(V-Sync) It synchronizes your FPS with the monitor refresh rate. Your fps will be capped at 30,45, or 60, but it will reduce the tearing. If you are playing above 60fps, with only a 60hz refresh rate, all the extra FPS above 60 arent shown, and this causes "tears" in the screen.
I dont care if you have 2 9800GX2 SLI and the $2000 dell 30in display playing at 600 FPS on wow or something, you will get tearing without V-Sync. Listen to these people when they tell you something like what solaris said, they know what they are talking about.

i think what he wants, is to remove tearing without enabling Vsync. That isnt possible - its variation between high and low FPS that causes the tearing so V-sync is the only option.

What you are asking for isnt possible.

DamnIt Nigel! Enable the vsync! (j/k) A 5ms monitor should hang for gaming. I played COD4 on a first gen $1000 (then) Mitsubishi 15" LCD and it looked p***y pink in my eyes. (It looked awesome in other words) The ms on that monitor has to be 16+. Your gpu has the power to run vsync (or is that a feature the grean camp is lacking, lol). Do you have the mfg. display drivers installed? If you havent already, I would uninstall the nVidia drivers and reinstall them. Is you display digital? If it is and you are running it analog, get the dvi cable. Good luck.

many people, myself included hate vsync. i get odd mouselag in some games, and dislike being stuck at 60FPS (openGL games are often worse, sticking at 30 sometimes)

His problem is that he doesnt want Vsync, but wants to remove the tearing - it cant be done. Buying a 100Hz LCD screen may help, but they arent cheap.

Wait for OLED displays: they have great refresh rates and are rated in hundredths of milliseconds!
Other than that, your options are vsync, CRT, or a very expensive monitor.

CRT's still exhibit the same effect when Vsync is off.

CRT's are usually around the range of 75hz which is a little better than LCD's but not good enough to remove tearing. Without enabling v-sync there isn't much that can happen without blowing huge amounts of money as other members said. I guess the next question would be what games are you playing that you notice all this tearing in? At 60+ fps any tearing would be marginal as they would only last 1-2/60 of a second.

Read this guide fella its a good read and will help you understand things more clearly
It tells you all about vsync and tearing you'll also learn how and why a lcd and crt operate as they do enableing triple buffering can help boost fps with vsync enabled on newer cards or cards with a large onboard memory.

Thanks guys, I guess its 60fps for now.

I only play racing games to be honest, so 60fps is cool.
