who know how to tell when your hard drive is about to fail?
Hi I really need to know how to tell when your hard drive is about to fail because I have got to get data recovery on this one it has got a lot of important stuff on please help?

Alot of disk activity?
Won't boot Windows/Linux? Stopped storing new files? Is it clicking? Take a few "power-on"s to get recognized by your bios? These are all things you can ask yourself. Generally the further down you can say yes, the more damaged the hdd is. |

There is no real way to predict when a HD will fail. You can monitor bad sector growth and if it is constantly increasing you may want to replace the HD.
A HD can fail at any time. The best way to prevent data loss is to make sure you are doing regular backups of the data.

backups of data is allways good
i like to keep my music backed up be that on my other pc or an mp3 player i also like to back up my saves for games that way if the hard disk dies i can either redownload or get out the install disk again andill be safe most of my programs are free or at least on a disk so i can make a list and downlaod them again important documents are allways backed up thats simple to remember Failing disks can be detected by regular BSODs, strange noises, slower than usual disk activity, disks stop spinning while in operation, bad sectors. The only way to be safe is know your HD might die at any time and then have cash ready for a new one or simply buy a new one befoer it dies. Noises and clicking are a big sign somethings up and it either needs fixed or its a dieing.

Another thing I have seen when a hard drive is about to fail it will sometimes get hot very hot then you should back your data up asap.

Well I have had my computer since 2003 and all the HDD's I've had, only 1 has failed and BEFORE it died on me, it made strange clicking/buzzing sounds then a few days later, my turned my PC on and my PC said it couldn't boot from OS then I knew the HDD went.

an hdd can fail at any time, really, but there are some signs:
lots of bad sectors windows gives read/write errors occassionally clicking noises/other noises use software such as seatools for dos (located on the solaris dvd 3.0 with many other great hard drive diagnostic utilities) to see if there are irregularities in your drive.

I was just gonna start a similar thread, my HD just made some strange clicking noises when booting windows. Better start backing things up right now!
