dissapointing... the 4870 itself was suppossed to be near or better the 280 but now its just the Xfired 4870's will beat a single 280..............

All I know is... the 4870 is $299. Compare the scores to the $650 GTX280. I agree with the title.

it seems like the 4870 and GTX280 have similar performance but it looses alot of frames in dx10, maybe needs another hotfix

that graph looks a little fishy though, I thought the GTX280 performed better in crysis than that

well....maybe not rape. But it is certainly the better deal. Performance to price is WAY better. This will hopefully bring down that $650 price tag.

lol, nice ironic title. I guess the Nvidia GTX280 still is tops if money is not an object.

The cards are still very fresh, along with drivers...I'll stick with what I have and wait until the dust has settled in a few weeks-to-couple months time. The excitement just isn't there for me on either product atm...especially when I'm gaming with all the eye candy I want on a single 9600GT...granted I don't play Crysis (I still have the demo installed...good enuf for me).

At this point it does seem that there "should" be more to the 280 than there currently is...but if not, they gotta have a hard hit every now and then...just like AMD/ATI has. It's good to see competiteveness, but I want to see it closer in performance and price of single cards...I'm just not a multi-card kind of enthusiast/gamer.

don't forget, either - the 4870s are still on fresh, hotfixed drivers . . .

also, I'd likle to point out:

the only benchmark that those graphs represent is Crysis; and the 4870 appears to be damn close to a 280 . . . and I mean ridding it's ass like there's no tomorrow close, even the dual card setups are finger poking distance from each other.

This is a Crysis bench - we all know how nVidia cards run with Crysis. Based on those graphs, if they're pretty accurate, we should see a 4870 out performing a 280GTX in just about everything else.

It looks like the 4870 is a good competitor with the 280.
If the price is good it's a clear winner.
I like the numbers at 2560x1600, which is what I use.

I just had to laugh at that comment. Its true though. I was looking at the scores and its right there with it. Another generation (or maybe even a driver fix) and AMDs ATI cards may regain the top spot.

Improved drivers will help a bit. Similar performance for 1/2 the money? It's a no brainer!!!! I am counting the days until the 4870...

lol, why crysis? its like benching HL2 which is made and takes advantage of ATi cards better.
lets at least compare 3d mark scores to be fare.

even 3Dmark isnt a very good comparison. a comparison between same system, with the 2 differenct cards, and multiple games & not just Nvidia Optimized like most, would be more of a heads up, and more of a level playing field. literally.

TBH, I think this is ATI sandbagging the actual performance of the card, and offering a teaser . . .

they picked a bench that their cards don't normally perform anywhere near close to the competition, as a means of showing that they're now on par with their competition . . . they're trying to show that with their cards performing this well in something that they usually don't, we should be in for a nice surprise.

Just in comparison, based on various reviews, the 4850 averages around 25FPS at 1920x1200 on high settings; based on those charts (if accurate), the 4870 is running almost twice that.

And we've seen how well the 4850 runs other titles compared to Crysis.

What is the source here? And only Crysis? Hardly legit or telling, but may still be somewhat in the ballpark of things to come. I'm w/ you newtekie, I hope this forces nvidia to be competitive.

How in the hell can something that's $300 nearly match something that's $650. Nevertheless its only Crysis - the worst coded game out there. The charts make sense although they're terribly dubious. Very High in Crysis is a monster that can kill any card. But that High scores in dx9 are a bit off, 5-10 fps. I starting to love this competition thing, I kinda missed it for the last 2 yrs.

Yep, but their production cost is way too high... So, they will have to come up with something and fast.
But the real problem for AMD/ATi is that people don't know/ like /trust them.

I sure hope these aren't fake or skewed. I need a new graphics card; I sold my X1900XTX over a year ago and have been using a 8600GTS since. I'll tell you right now, I have a 24" monitor and I like to play my games at their nicest settings. Obviously I can't with any games while I'm still using a 8600GTS. I've been looking forward to this card for several reasons:
1) I have a Intel 975X based board so I'd be able to do crossfire with these.
2) They're cheaper: I vowed to never, ever spend more than $350 on a graphics card (because more than $350 is just plain too much)
3) They apparently overclock like theres no tomorrow; theres rumors of this card hitting the holy-grail of graphics cards, 1GHz core.

Anyway these better be legit or at least semi-accurate because I dont want to be all worked up for no reason...

While I hope these numbers are true...I think you must have very bad math skills or missed something on the graphs.

In DX9 the results were as follows...

50/46, 43/42, 24/22 that's -4, -1, and -2fps which I'd call "near or better"

Then in DX10 the results were...

24/21, 21/18, 11/9 that's -3, -3, and -2fps which again I'd call "near or better"

Factor in the price of less than half and I'd say that's a steal for the 4870 even on beta drivers. Perhaps you just read the graph wrong and looked at the SLI vs. single 4870 number?

Either way all of the new cards this round (from both manufacturers) are shaping up to be unbelievable performance so it's a win win.

We'll see about that. You people need to wait a bit until everything is properly released. These company graphs mean nothing to me. I will decide on what to get when proper vs reviews appear of the 4870 vs GX260. Oh and I like your new avatar, is that Rama?
