Maximum Temperature of Radeon 4850?
I was just wondering what is the maximum allowable temperature of the Radeon HD 4850?
Because i have read in reviews that the card with stock cooler runs very hot. Thanks. |

It should shut off before it hits the max temp. I've seen a couple reviews of it OC'd into the 90's before, still running benchmarks. If you're worried about temps, try to find a card with a non-stock heatsink on it. Not sure if they're making them yet, though ASUS might have one out.

Hi, i think thermal protection kicks in about 110-120 degrees, last week i brought a 4850 for a friends system it ran at 85 degrees max. I wouuld be woryed if it ran at over 100 degrees

The critical temperature should be the same, as @HD3870. Some sources says 120 degrees, some - 130. But i think you definitely need to replace stock cooler for something better.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but are we talking about Celcius? 120C is above the boiling point of water, can the 4850 chipset really take that much heat? I have the fan speed modded to 100% and a slight voltmod and I'm only hitting 76C on the stock cooler. If the 4850 can really take that much heat looks like I can still oc higher.

Yeah, those temps are in celsius. Hardware can take some crazy heat
![]() However, it doesn't mean it's good for the life of the card...

I'm still a bit nervous letting the card hit 100c, but maybe I can still oc a bit more until it hits 85C. Thanks for the replies.

Running cool at maximum
I just installed a new video, CPU and RAM last Monday (1/05/09) and it appears to be running incredibly cool, after reading this thread. I installed a Gigabyte HD 4850 OC 1GB (700MHz clock, 993MHz RAM), matched OCZ Reaper HPC PC4800 (1.8v, 5-5-5-18) and Athlon 64 x2 6000+ (3.1GHz, G2 stepping). Right now I am running a burn in with the Video Card Stability Test from Freestone, on top of Mediaplayer Classic which is displaying television straight from my Hauppauge Win-TV 1800 ("Dinner At Eight" with Jean Harlow and Wallace Beery.) The CPU is running 35%/55%, varying up and down, with a 1.05% overclock, at 50 degrees Celsius. RAM is running 1.9v. HD 4850 is 1.19v, running currently 95-96% GPU usage at 59 degrees Celsius. It's been running like that for over an hour. I'm trying to find something that will take the CPUs up to 100% but I don't think that will make much difference to the video card. It helps that my Antec 900 case has seven fans running, including the Zalman 9500 with Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU and the Zalman VF830 on the HD 4850. As long as you have enough airflow in the case, overheating should never be a worry. This rig gets 50fps on the Crysis demo (probably not max settings; the demo doesn't seem to have settings for that.) The Video Card Stability Test benchmarks at 377fps.
Addendum: I'm running the Everest stress test which maxes the CPU, and it hasn't gone above 62 degrees Celsius. (I turned the TV off because it was almost grinding to a halt.) However, running that and the video stress test makes the GPU usage dance all over the place and the GPU temp drops to 48 degrees. The video stress test color spinning globe disappears. I think half the video test uses the CPU/FPU. So, I still haven't found a reliable way to stress the video card and the CPU together to 100% for a consistent test. I have Gainward 4850 GLH with GDDR5
, stock cooler. Running F@H for 2 hours, and GPU temp. is between 50-55C @50% fan speed. My AMD X2 6000+ CPU temp. is at most 50C full load with Thermaltake V1 AX cooler. |

mine (4850) when playing Devil May Cry 4 its temp goes at 115 at fan 100% and idle at 76 with fan at 100% . isn't that very high? with fan at automatic temp is also 80. is it my tower's fans that does not help to keep low temp at my gpu?please could some1 enlighten me?

As always considering temps: the lower, the better.
My HD4850 (Asus one with Glaciator cooling) goes mad after the VRMs hit 91/92 degrees Celsius, then the fun is over. |

In my opinion optimum temps are in the 60s and no higher than the 70s. (celsius)
This is with AIR cooling. Voltage mods wil greatly increase temps. |
