Price-cuts of GeForce GTX 200 Series Imminent

Sources tell TG Daily that there are a series of price cuts scheduled for the GeForce GTX 200 series graphics cards. The GeForce GTX 260 which now sells for as low as US $379.99 (after e-tailer rebates), could have its price slashed by US $30 sending its price down to as low as $359.99, and the flagship GTX 280 could face a US $90 slash sending its price down to as low as $559.99 (versus the original price). There is a likelihood of e-tailers coming up with their own rebate schemes. The fresh price-bands could take effect from the 7th of July, 2008.

It still isn't low enough to compete against HD4870.

From $380 to $360 is $20 and a 5% decrease. That's not slashing; it's just a small reduction.

nVidia need to find a much deeper discount to those prices to remain a credible competitor with those products.

Prices still need to come down, but this is a step in the right direction(even if it is a small step).

Oh yes of course. If nvidia had their way it would still be $659/$449 right now. Gotta love competition.

by the time nvidia price cuts more, ati is like one step in front with alot better bang for buck :P
GTX200 series cost like shit to make compared to creapy cheap RV770

like ATI has 55nm, 256bit memory bus (cost alot less), GDDR5 (alot more bandwidth)

Friggin hilarious. NV we want moar for less not less for moar. They seriously need to bring that junk down. The 4870 @ $300 is already faster than the GTX260 so wouldn't it make all the sense in the world to at most have it at $300. Unfortunately, the GTX280 is a hopeless pipe dream, $400- or bust. So far its a bust.

I think nvidia DO plan to bring the price down more. In fact, I bet they would LOVE to bring that price down TODAY. The problem is simple:

INVENTORY

Can you imagine how much stock is in the distribution and retail channels at the moment? They cant just slash the price without making a lot of their most important business partners (wholesalers, distributors and retailers) very very very very unhappy.

So they have to edge the price down... at a rate where everyone in the supply chain can move their stock without incurring losses.

Newegg already has the PNY GTX 260 for $329 after rebate. Asus is next cheapest with $369.

I think the 4870 caught Nvidia day dreaming and is a big part of the price drops but IMO 4850 was a bit more of a motivator. Newegg has had 3 promo code/ MIR deals with the 4850's for $149.99 (I jumped on the Asus). While not as fast as the GTX 260, $149-169 is a whole lot less than even PNY's $329.... enough in fact that I'm willing to forgive the lighter (but still close) fps.

NV 200 cards are not selling, ATI are taking all the sales with their sublime 4000 series cards, expect much steeper reductions from NV very soon, because even after the current cuts, they still not going to sell, if your after high end, just by a 4870, not far of a 280 and way cheaper.

There's no question about it: the GTX280 prices are way off mark.

But the GTX 260 is approximately the same performance at stock as the 4870, but will overclock 20% with ease. They cost about 25% more than the 4870. So still overpriced... but much closer. A small drop in price of the GTX 260 will actually make it quite competitive.

$350 is a comfortable price for the GTX 260. Sure at stock speeds it equals the HD4870, but with an on-air OC equal the GTX 280 (stock speed) performance, which 4870 can't. So $50 is all that lies between a HD4870 and a card that can perform on par with stock-GTX 280.

That's the part about that other story that I found interesting... while there's probably still a decent case for the idea that DX10.1 isn't needed now and probably won't be for a while I'm sure a lot of people knowing that Nv will be supporting it in the near future would question how smart it would be to buy a card that doesn't support it (especially on top of the other considerations for those 2 cards).

Actually it really surprises me that they would even let that leak if it's true that it will be so long before these cards (which presumably should be the die shrink) are released.

Aaah, gotta love competiton! Too bad these "price slices" are more like "price paper-cuts", they don't leave "marks" on the market...

Still too little too late. There is a lot of buzz on the net about how these cards are an epic fail for Nvidia already. Kind of hard to say that when they arent even out in the hands of consumers yet for real. MaximumPC got an engineer sample for their newest issue and pretty much got a boner over its performance (they are nvidia fanboys to a t, though they are even keeled with ATIs stuff).

Performance doesnt mean jack if people arent buying your products.

Another thing, the 4870 wont win performance crowns, but its either neck in neck with both GT cards, a little behind, or a tad bit ahead in some tests. Thats enough to garner it alot of market share. Same goes for the 4850. I cant wait for price cuts on these cards.
