YAWN. TPM is somewhat old. Any proficient cracker will most likely get through them. It might take longer but meh... it wont stop it. Maybe dropping the release price of the game would help? Paying $100 AUD on release in retail is ludicrous when paying $40 AUD (Race driver GRID) on steam will get you the same thing..

Announcing the end of gaming piracy is ludicrous. As long as there's a security system, there will be someone trying (and succeeding) to get around it.

Man, EA even thought that they have stopped game piracy because of how they did Mass Effect... But, that didn't work. You just have to know what you are doing. There is a lot of game programmers out there that have gotten screwed over by their once faithful company. So, what do they do, help game piracy. It's never going to stop. Never.
Like what TK says. If you just make it to where EVERYONE can buy the game at one flat rate, like steam does, then you'd have more and more people wanting the game.

there is only one way to stop piracy. make the games free.

Look at firefox, it makes shitloads of money despite no one ever having paid for it... games should make money via (non obtrusive) advertising and statistics.

Mussels: that is true. If you allow the game to have a right frame of "money spent" then you'll have more and more people that want that game. Look at one thing I saw that was big a while back. Nerd alert for those who want to say what I am. Holly Berry did X-Men 2 for nothing. Why? Because she told reporters that if the movie was as big as X-Men 1 then she can make up for anything she lost in revenue, advertising of the character and so on.
Yeah, the game industry doesn't have that type of money like she does, but it shows that even if you don't make the cash on the title it self, sponsorship and advertising will be where the money is at!

One thing though, gamers don't like advertising butting-in on their playing. take BF2142, that had in-game advertising even though it was a retail game. Far Cry has been released in the US for free with in-game advertising.
Steam's got the right idea; let people download the game files (for a price) then on the "release" date, send unlock codes/files. one step further would be to send unlock codes that are unique to each gamer's PC that way they can't distribute .isos on torrents and warez sites

they need say, to place an ad on the load screen. have the movies at the start of the game (everyone knows the intro movies i speak of) rotate monthly, or everytime the game is patched.

There are ways to get ads in, without pissing people off... if they try.

even so, EA, the #1 asshole of the gaming industry released a free game, did they not?

*cough, to AMERICA ONLY cough*

its a start. it could well head that way, for online based games. look at the free-to-air TV industry and how much money gets made from that, despite no one paying directly to watch the shows.

heh its worse for consoles, i got mario kart for my wii and the retail price was $99.

Managed to get it for $65... using a special, and a staff discount from my housemate. games just cost too much, so people pirate them. reduce the prices, you allow more people to buy the game and prices go down.

That is true. If you mod your console then your able to download and get anything. Then it worse with overseas because of the fact it cost GODLY money just to buy a game. It's a upgrade to the computer or a game there... Never good.

well many people would argue a physical, hardware lock (ID'ing a PC through its motherboard, for example) would solve it. The hardware mods to consoles would suggest otherwise.

No matter what security there is, there is always a way around it if people get motivated enough.

World of warcraft and its secure servers? run your own! (yes i've seen someone run a WoW server at a LAN) windows vista? OEM bios hacks! Consoles? hardware mods!

Ha! You just disable the part of the game that is looking for TPM. No hard mods needed. Nothing will ever stop piracy. As long as that thing is not something physical that is complicated and hard to reproduce people will copy it no matter what.

The more complicated it is, the more expensive it will be and the more problems it will cause people (example: securom and its random bugs), so the harder people will work to bypass it.

Anti piracy is dead, they really need to look for a new approach.

True, computer parts here are over priced, maybe due to economic problems, even more console/console games here are way too much... Ex. 8800GT 1Gb = 29,000Php, PS3 ranges about 15-20kPhp, depending on what is bundled, HDD size etc, same goes for XBX360 and Wii.

Their games ranges from 2kPhp to 3kPhp , Filipino gamers would get a big hole in their pockets.

Although about piracy/software protection "They're just software with codes, and a smart person with know-how is able to reverse engineer it to provide work arounds" *cough* scene groups.

and company of heroes/opposing fronts.

Many steam games dont get released here, because the publishers complain when we can buy it elsewhere for half the price.
