Radeon HD 3000 Series Reaches EOL in this Quarter

With the advent of the Radeon HD 4000 series, AMD is regaining lost ground in the consumer PC graphics industry. They have been 'third time lucky' in their DirectX 10(.1) conquest after HD 2000 and HD 3000 series didn't quite make a mark against the might of NVIDIA. Apparently AMD is through with preparing the RV710 and RV730 graphics processors (GPUs) which will drive video-cards with several different configurations of memory and GPU parameters. AMD looks to compete in the sub-US $150 market with these cards for which it will phase-out the HD 3000 series cards within this quarter (Q3 2008). The products will reach End-Of-Life (EOL).

I agree - I'm a little shocked they're pulling out so quick as well . . . but I can't complain, for the same cost the HD3000 series were less than 2 months ago, there's beasts on the shelves running near twice as fast.

I might just have to pick me up another cheap 3870, though

Farewell my friends (3870x2s), you served me well. Atleast I managed to use their (near) full potential for 9 days b4 getting my 4850

Heh, I just may plug them in again when the last driver improvement for them shows up just to see their end results

Remember that the 4xxx series isnt just 4850 and 4870 but 4650 and others. No need to maintain old fab process when mid and cheap end is available from 4xxx series.

PS. Isnt the 4650 the same spec as the 3870 but lower power? Sounds like a winner.

EOL for AMD/ATI not for the consumer.
We should remember that not all people are gaming enthusiasts like we are, i was buying some stuff today for my work when i saw people buying "AIT AIW 2006 Edition" wich is a x1300 because of it's price 19€ i managed to get one agp x1300 for my celeron 700

i'm still wating for the new aiw paired with 3xxx or 4xxx gpu, it was in the new's but i can't find them retail any where.

And EOL doesn't mean no driver support, my 9800se runs fine maybe i lost track when it was EOL for that part

The low end isn't the 3850 or 3870. It's the ubercheap 3650 and 3450 which are just refreshed 2400/2600 anyway. Those GPUs really suck for games so no sadness seeing them go, assuming we aren't just going to see them with new names again.

You maybe right but I thought for sure it had something more to it. I used to own a 2900xt and it cant hold a candle to the 4850 in games.
