Intel to Debut Ultra-Fast 180GB SSDs Next Week at IDF

Trying to keep up with the competition in the eyes of Micron and its recently introduced RealSSD drives, Intel declared readiness to debut new SSDs too during IDF next week. With the SSD market heating up, Intel's new storage agents will offer bumped read/write speeds and double the SSD storage capacity we're used to see. The drives will be available in 1.8" and 2.5" format factors and offer a bandwidth of 240 MB/s read and 70-170 MB/s write. Capacities will range from 32GB and 64GB to the rather unusual 80GB and 160GB. No pricing information is available, but big toys always come with a price so don't expect them to be cheap.

Stupid Expreview sticking their logo all over the important data.

Notice the power requirements of the Enterprise 240/170 MB/s edition compared with the consumer version. I also suspect the info is incorrect: I doubt the enterprise and consumer versions will have identical read rates, and if you look at the slide, the "took out the 1" to turn 170W into 70W.

I suspect slapdash slide with some inaccuracies. Nonetheless, Intel getting in with a speedy SSD will help get prices down and volumes up.

Exactly. The consumer needs just the raw facts and the price. until they come down to say 100GB for $150 say, no one will be that interested.

That's not true. Some people would, as always. Look at the freaks who bought 280GTX Tri-SLi on the day the card was released. I think a sweet spot for SSD for enthusiasts will be $100 for 32GB, with 100MB/s+ read and write. That way I think we would ALL buy one for our main OS/pagefile drive, and use a regular 1TB SATA for all our data and rips.

Well you gotta think this way. When they first came out 64gig was like what, 8grand? I saw the OCZ Core SSD 64gig for like 225 bucks not to long ago. Now that Core2 is out thats probably cheaper.
