need a new nanobga2 cpu

yes i know its for old outdated p3 systems, bu i still use my old tecra 8200[well, new i got it a few months ago] and want to upgrade it, since i cant afford to buy anything newer[and i mean it].
the system is so/so, a p3 900 and 384 ram with w2k running stable in it. dvdrom/cdrw but only reads cds, and soon to be electrostatic speakers replacing the horrible stock ones[hardware hacking is a hobby of mine].
what im wondering however, is can i possibly find a p31ghz in the nanobga2 format, since a friend want the 900 to replace the god-awful celeron500 in the satellite pro 4200 im rebuilding them[recycling broken ones into working ones] and i want something faster in mine, since its fairly nice given its age[has built in wireless g and onboard lan, unlike most laptops ive owned so far]

so can anyone help me out here? i would love to see some upgrades, even if non-intel[via made a nanobga2 chip i think]

and before anyone says it, i did google it and came up with nothing

TBH, you wont see much difference between 900 MHz and 1 GHz; You'd be much better off getting another 256 MB RAM stick to take the RAM up to 512 MB, get a quicker HDD (old laptop drives are 4200 RPM standard, a 5400 RPM one off eBay will give faster loading times), and save up for a better laptop.
I've found that on my Inspiron (also a PIII) RAM and HDD make a big difference.
As for your friend, if you can find an old laptop at a local PC repair shop (or similar) then most would have a CPU faster than a Celeron 500.

well a buddy of mine has a few 700mhz cpus for nanobga2, i was hoping to help them get the best thing i could find into they'rs and get something even better into mine while i was at it
i did manage to fix the hinge on they'rs and jsut have to install ubuntu onto it[as per theyre request] but it wont boot properly with the cpu in it now. i even stuck my laptops 256 in it and it still crawls along and then crashes on booting the cd
like i said, if anyone has a link or two to stuff about these kinds of CPUs, even if non-intel i'de love that.
and as much as i wish to save for a new laptop i simply cant afford to support my computer desires without starving for a few months or not paying bills[two people on $1200 a month, $800 rent and $200 bills, you do the math], which is why i choose to stay two to 12 years behind in terms of parts[buying top of the line used parts from several years ago at less than a fraction of the price]

If you really want to find a new CPU, then what you are looking for is a NanoBGA2 Pentium III Mobile CPU with a 100 MHz FSB, 256 kb L2 Cache, Coppermine (core name). They come in speeds from 500 MHz to 1 GHz, Celerons have 128 kb L2 cache.
Typically, they will cost less than $100, but I'd recommend getting more RAM first, running CCleaner, defragging your hard drive, and optimizing everything in general.
As far as I know, you CAN NOT run a different CPU type in your laptop; the chipset should be i440 or similar, and only Coppermine Pentium III CPUs work in it. No AMD or VIA chip will work.

true id go with a new set of ram and new hard drive, you could stick linux on yer hard drive too since linux is lighter than windows

i figure to win 2000 or even xp would be fine

cant you overclock that cpu? a good other thing to do would be to get some expensive thermal paste and use that on the cpu like arctic cooling MX2

hehe, the plan for this tecra is to get a select-a-bay hard disk kit, stick a 80 or better in it then stick linux on that
it presently runs windows 2000, its the ONLY install of it i've found works flawlessly and then only cause a buddy of mine[who is too lazy to get off windows] set it up with the w2k and tweaked it a bunch. as for overclocking, unless i can find a floppy disk drive for this thing and a alternate BIOS for it that allows overclocking then no, it automatically adjusts cpu frequency according to the system load and power source
that '83mhz' is really a 133 stick of 256, but it adds more ram which is better than less i suppose

Ok, with the RAM, even though it is rated at 133 MHz it will only run at the CPU's maximum FSB speed, which is 100 MHz. I've found that with my Dell, SDRAM at 133 MHz with a 100 MHz option can not run properly in it; it has to run at 100 MHz native.
You will see a bigger performance increase by using more RAM, and you will find it is almost impossible to OC your CPU (I've tried...). Also, I'm not sure if PIIIs support it, but with two matched RAM sticks you might get the benefit of Dual Channel RAM (which gives a noticable boost).
Have you considered trying Windows XP on it, but slimming it down using nLite? I cut XP down so that it used less than 100 MB of RAM and 1 GB of HDD space.

hehehe, im never using windows xp again if i can help it
w2k is as we say in my group, the cream of the crap, and so long as the programs i need/want are running in it then im using it. windows itself has caused me enough headaches i want to end microsoft but wxp has causes me the most pain. if anything, and if it came to reinstalling on the tecra[when i upgrade the hdd im going to take a image of the disk from this one and put it on the new one] i will go with ubuntu linux[feisty] or with another install of w2k[since i mostly use it for msn, fls8 and half life anyways]. as for overclocking, if i had it in a desktop socket i definitely could[i have a dual p3@1ghz running at 1.1, max the jumpers support] but i dont know of the laptops[im in the process of getting a busted p4 to fix myself]

Ok, if you dont want to use XP then the program vLite also supports W2K; there are reports of some people getting it to run on only 48 MB of RAM!!
If you're going to put Linux on it, first try Xubuntu version 7.10; it is more reliable and uses less resources, and so far I've had the most luck with it running on any old PC. If you are going to run it, then you really do want to get 512 MB of RAM into your laptop; anything less reduces performance dramatically. Even though Xubuntu is meant for slower PCs, 512 MB of RAM helps a lot for running almost any app.
Also, you might want to consider Puppy Linux; I installed it onto my sister's laptop (P3 600, 192 MB RAM), and she loves it. Anything else ran sloooooow.

im actually quite farmilliar with linux, its my first choice when i have to install onto a system, as for xubuntu, i think ubuntu would run fine, by the time i have to reinstall i will have 512 ram anyways and i just installed it to a p3@700[900 upgrade but board downs to 700, was a celeron 500] with 256, running a almost full[almost=no compiz] gnome enviroment with laptop utils, and a ubuntu-studios theme, runs faster than the p3 900 in windows. if it werent for the fact that i need to run a .reg to install fl7 and want to play half life on it, i would install ubuntu to my laptop[im in the process of RMAing some drives to reinall to my main desktop]
anyways, i have my answers to the origional question, so thank you all for your help :3
