nVidia 8-series CUDA with ATi video

I wonder if mixing an ATi video card with an 8-series nVidia card for a PPU can be done WITHOUT driver conflicts. Those with both can you attempt to install, test for me and post results.

Comments?

Thank you in advance.

You can use nvidia for phisix and ati for graphic in xp, vista won't allow you.

Mmk, have any screenies or links? I just want to make sure. I was thinking of modding one of my PCIe 1x slots to fit an 8400GS.

Vista only allows one video driver active at a time. Mixing both brands doesnt work.

It does under XP, so long as you play it carefully (what i did was made sure the ATI CCC wasnt set to load on boot, last time i did this the CCC loaded too fast and caused problems accessing a card that 'didnt exist')

Hmmmm, so as long as 'autostart' is disabled in MSCONFIG for CCC and manually launch after boot should be no problems?

it worked stable enough when i did it (long before SP3 came out)
I'd suggest doing a backup before trying it, because the other time i tried it, it hosed the OS...

why bother? at best you'll likely have instability issues, I say sell the two cards and invest in one card that can handle higher settings that the one card, and who REALLY needs physics?

I was actually thinking of doing this when I upgrade CPU(maybe e7300)+Video(possibly 4850) on my rig and giving hers a small facelift with an HD3870+8400GS+e1200.

Very cool fastmix! I don't think my 7900gt can do phyx, but I am intrigued by your success.

How much is an 8600?

But then I am still runnig pci-e 1 and my mobo....when you are runnig two cards splits it x8x8 so it's probably not worth it anyway.

P.S. Yes I know..waiting for Nehlam to upgrade.

That is not my system in the pic.

As I understood it, it was vista 64 bit that would only allow I video card. I read it would work on vista 32.

If you open an elevated command prompt (in vista 32) and type " bcdedit.exe /set testsigning on" and reboot..it put the computer in test mode, that's probably how they did it.
It allows you to use unsigned system drivers.

I was looking around a bit on the web today and found this article at Tom's Hardware.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvi...-ati,5764.html

It seems that physx can be enabled on ATI graphic cards...so no need for a Nvidia counterpart. =/

Edit: with the help of some modified drivers that is.

I am aware of those and it's older information. Something that never got leaked as of yet, IIRC.

Ah. I see. I really didn't check the date. It's just that this peaked my interest. I hope they are released. then there will be no reason to buy NVIDIA cards just because they have physx. Deep down, I hope physx fails. I don't see its potential. just one more component that needs to be in a computer that doesn't really need to be.
